AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I took my newly acquired Hathor 15 to the music store with my SB5001 to try out some heads today. Before leaving, I plugged in my SVT as a benchmark. At the store, I tried a TC RH450, Ampeg SVT7, Trace Elliot AH600, and an Aguilar TH350. I had been there a couple days ago and played them through an ampeg 15" cab and I actually preferred the SVT7 at the time. After trying them with the Hathor, I preferred the Aguilar but had them order me a 500 for little more headroom. I can't say that I felt it needed it but it can't hurt. The Aguilar and Hathor are a very nice combo.

OTOH, this response smoothing function might be more easily and flexibly incorporated at line level via a box/pedal in the effects loop. It could also include a low bass boost tailored to the cab (and its capabilities -excursion limits). This approach might be more cost effective, incur less weight penalty and allow for future upgrades. It would also allow players to switch in those response changes 'on the fly'. Just an idea… OTOH, maybe it's a good idea to just keep things simple, and incorporate theses changes in the cab as you planned.

Very interesting idea... unfortunately, I'm not much of a line level guy; I'm more comfortable with a speaker-level filter.

The 1231 will include the Eminence 3012LF and Faital 3FE22 with a dome tweeter alongside the little Faital, and maybe a little unexpected twist somewhere along the way. Also included will be switchable upper-mid response smoothing circuitry. Box size and tuning will be identical to the 1203.

[Edit 4-6-2014: The 1231 has been prototyped, and the tweeter isn't worth the added trouble and expense, so I'm pulling the plug on the 1231. But the midrange smoother circuitry is clearly beneficial, and will be offered as an option.]

Not "needed", but the 3" cone's top-end articulation isn't as good as the tweeter's, nor is its dispersion as good. So this would be the deluxe version, with an eye towards upright bass as well as a wide range of acoustic instruments.

Yes, the absence of a tweeter is definitely part of the mojo of the 1203! But for some people, the presence of a tweeter would be part of the mojo they're looking for.

I've wanted to do an uber-compact version of the 8-ohm Thunderchild 112 for a while, because the stock 3012LF will work in a smaller box that the Thunderchild. But what I keep running into is, there are no high-quality horns small enough to significantly shrink the TC112. Well, by going with a three-way format that uses a 3" cone and a small dome tweeter, we can shave four inches off the height. In practice, that just means adding a tweeter to the Hathor 1203.

That's where a bit of finesse in the crossover design comes into play.

Duke, I know you've commented on not finding a 10 you like. I'm assuming you looked at the 10 they use for the F110 on the Greenboy design. Have you typed up your thoughts on that driver? I don't recall reading that, if you did.

Yup. I haven't found a 10" woofer that's really the counterpart to the Kappalite 3012LF. The 3010LF doesn't go up as high and is harder to cross over, so I'd have to either go with a much beefier compression driver or add a midrange, a real midrange, not a little 3" cone that's functioning more like a tweeter. By then, it's a heavier and more expensive cab. And greenboy is already making that cab in his Fearless 110.

The 1203 is very intriguing. The pace of the new offerings from the TB boo-teek gang is so fast I'm afraid to try anything.:D
