AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

As far as just stain---the problem is that the cabs are poplar plywood. It's pretty darn soft--but very light. If it were just stained it would look visably scratched up aftr a few gigs. It's like a bass that I had made with a figured redwood top.Just an oil finish.It develops scratches if you look at it sideways. The Bag End speakers are Baltic Birch. That stuff is like concrete. When I was a kid all of my cabs were BB with an oil finish. Give it a little sanding once a year and apply oil---good as new.

I've grown to really like Duratex. The main reason--it protects ok but is a breeze to repair. You can bash it and take out a big divot and use Bondo (with fiberglass---not the pink stuff for big repairs---the pink stuff is great for dents and big scratches) sand, and apply Duratex. Parts Express has repair kits with a roller. Experiment with a cardboard box until you feel confident in your technique and you'll be all set. If you get a similar bash with natural wood, Tolex, or even truck bed liner you're s--t out of luck. And the Bondo is stronger that the plywood.

Corner swap complete. The stack locks into place like a champ. I can put away the toothpicks and woodglue. Maybe...

My issue with the aesthetics was due to the waffle grills reminding me of cheap PA gear from the 80's (Phonic comes to mind). I've made peace with it - function trumps form, though these do have their own functional aesthetic thing going on.

oooh. i like that. i could use some of those.

when i've stacked the h1204 and c1203t, i went to other way, with the hathor on the bottom. i thought i'd get more coupling with the hathor on rhe bottom and more of the "air" of the changeling if the vents were not covered.

i feel you on the round waffle grills. i always felt that way, too, but i'm okay with 'em on the AK stuff. go figure.

yes, thanks Passinwind for helping me out with that....I finally got the camera and the PC to cooperate and I can post pics now.....lol

That bass in the pic is a Fast Bass built by luthier Kevin Fast in South Surrey, BC, Canada. It was the first bass he built (he'd been building guitars only and they were super so I asked if he'd build one completely custom). I think I may have some info still in the Gear Reviews page of TB. It's a short scale and the neck was spec'd with my other custom Fish Bass (luthier Jeff Ziebart in Kelowna, BC). I love that neck so much I made sure the Fast Bass had the same neck. It's a 14" radius and 1.5" at the nut and 17" at the bridge. I have small hands and these meas. are just right for me. It's a chambered mahogany body with myrtlewood top, mahogany/wenge stringers and rosewood board. Very light at around 6.5 lbs and has Hipshot tuners and bridge with SGD pups (no longer being made) got lucky and got those pups just before he went awol and left many with prepaid orders and no pups delivered.....the whole bass is one heck of a warm rock/blues punchy bass....I love it

Bug him about it. He and I trade technology all of the time. He's using my custom 10's and I've used his 15's. My custom 12 is his enclosures would make a nice vintage sounding cab. We always ask each other's permission---he's got mine.

Seriously, a cab like that with a tube hybrid head from Arkham would be my dream amplification come true. :)
