AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

duke and I are both swamped, but when I was building cabs for Duke I remember finding grills (I think Penn Elcom) that had round holes (small holes) that were round. I'll see if I can find them. I've grown to like his aesthetic . This isn't a diss--his cabs are like the plain Jane girl that gets up at the open mic jam and opens her mouth and it's like "holy crap"! When I first got the Thunderchild guys on gigs were like "what the hell is that?" (on gigs that I would usually bring much bigger speakers) and later they would say "holy s--t--where is the sound really coming from?"

I heard from him a couple of days ago. He had just gotten back home from a holiday road trip, I think.

Don't remember where I read this, but I'm pretty sure the HPB-1 (and HBP-1 800D) are 10.5" deep (correct me if I'm wrong), same as the TF550-B I have here. The head is currently unracked, but I was able to put it atop the Hathor 1203, back edge of the amp lined up with the back edge of the cab, and the front of the amp comes right up to the mid-chamber openings on top but doesn't cover them. If you have a shallow rack or rackbag and are okay with a couple or three inches hanging off the back, you should be able to set it atop the cab without obscuring the openings (not sure whether to call them "ports" or not). I snapped a photo a few days ago with my phone, but couldn't get it to upload. Not a very exciting photo, in any case, and you'll find out soon enough for yourself -- if you haven't already -- how it sits!

I recall him saying he would be out of pocket for a while during the holiday season...and that was just before the holidays when I was shipping a cab that he had asked me to try out for a few weeks. Additionally, he was swamped with orders on top of the typical extra stuff associated with both personal and professional obligations at the end of the year.

Never mind obligations. I just want my flying car before the NAMM show.

Yep, I agree.

Its easy to instal grill cloth on these waffle grills:

I just removed the grill and its rubber edge gasket, then I discovered it was super easy to tightly stretch the cloth because sharp edges of the grill will grip and hold the cloth in place as you work your way around... Then I simply reinstalled the rubber edging, trimmed off the excess cloth from the back side and reinstalled the grill.

The mod is fully reversible because I didn't use any glue or adhesives. Covering a flat expanded metal grill like this without adhesives would typically result in the cloth rattling against the grill as you play. But that's not an issue here because of the convex shape of Dukes grills, It can't rattle long as the cloth is tightly stretched.

SpeakerHardware had them in stock the last time I checked. I've been planning on getting one for my TC cab whenever I eventually need a replacement, but the original one is still in perfect shape, and the look doesn't really bug me at all. Lots of fairly expensive pro sound cabs have used "bug eyes" over the years, and I never paid much attention to cheap DJ and car audio stuff.
