AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I’m currently waiting to go onstage at a cool club in midtown Memphis and I’ve brought my rig here before (being lazy tonight after a long day and just brought bass and pedalboard) but they love the H1203 and Quilter BB800 and insist that I bring it every time. I only have one set to play tonight but I wish I had ‘my’ rig here right now

I did try out a BH500 through my TC112, not a 750, but a cousin. It sounded as good as everything else has sounded through that cab. I don’t think it has a bad partner.

First off, congratulations! I had very good luck with a Mesa D-800 and a GK MB800 with that cab when I was testing one out. Given the efficiency is a tad on the lower side (not a criticism or a problem), I found that cab to be better suited to heads with the higher power ratings. I suspect any head would sound great with that cab (it's that good), but I would want at least 300-400 honest Watts at 8 Ohms on tap to get the most out of it. YMMV!

Duke definitely hit a home run with that design, and IMO proved that light, small (relatively), and loud (+ great tone) is an achievable design goal! :thumbsup:

I have run a Markbass LMlll into a TC cabinet and recently bought a Mesa D-800+ and have been trying that through it. They are very different heads which is why I asked what your tone goals are. The Markbass is a warmer sound. The Mesa is a little more hi-fi but is so versatile that it will come close to the sound of the Markbass, more than the Markbass can come close to it. The D-800+ is a good bit more expensive though, so you pay for all of that versatility. Aguilar Tonehammer is another amp in that league and is probably the warmest and most mid present of all of them. GK amps are extreme to the other end - the hifi sound. I don't know anyone that plays TC Electronic gear. Can't help you there.

Thanks for sharing those insights! I kinda lean toward experimental rock. Very much love mid-forward, driving-tones. Grew up in the 80s on bassists like Adam Clayton, Mike Mills, etc. I think Mesa or GK would likely get me there, especially with a light overdrive. Markbass always sounds great when I’ve played them in the past, especially run at 4ohms. GK is modern yet quite versatile...Whenever I see players rockn a TH500 it always sounds superb live. Just happy I started with the Changeling :)

Well, the Changeling is a great start, for sure. You might also want to try a Reidmar 750 for that tone, as well. Or for cleaner (but still very full, meaty and balanced) tone, maybe a Peavey MiniMega or Bergantino Forte.

I like it a lot. My initial excitement, I'll admit, was about the onboard overdrive/distortion options, but I have found it to be a fantastic sounding "clean machine," as well. Very slightly scooped to my ears with the tone controls at noon, but a nicely flexible tone stack. Hits very hard, for sure, and built like a tank. A beautiful, beautiful, tank.

I use the TCE RH450 with the H1203 and it sounds great. The RH750 adds tweeter tone and a bit more hight end. I'm a huge fan of the RH450 but I cannot recommend it because the knobs tend to fall off (literally) which is beyond annoying.

I have used the following amps with my AK cabs: , GH 1001 rb, Eden 550wt, Aguilar TH500, and currently Quilter bb800. I have had the RH450 in the past, but sold it prior to my first AK Cab. The AK gear sounds amazing through each of these heads and I was so pleased with the cab no matter what head was driving it. I'm really enjoying the quilter and have no amp gas at all at the moment as the quilter delivers the clean low-end punch and slam that I crave.

3 outings this week, one of those portable folding stages with a couple of hundred folks, a senior center rec room with all hard surfaces and a small wine bar with hardwood floors. One hathor with the port plugged and the subway. I'm really digging the port plug, PJ on full P, flats, adjust bass knob to taste.

This probably marks me old hat, though I swear by the Acoustic Image heads. My only amp for 10 years or more (electric, upright and jazz guitar). Totally uncolored, paired with my Changeling 112 (serial #1) it totally kicks on every gig. Lots of "love your sound" comments. I have both AI Clarus and Focus heads and consider them interchangeable. Also use them with my Greenboy F112 (also great sound) though for most gigs these days I grab the one AK cab. AI has fabulous customer service. I play Lakland fivers mostly and my live sound can be as crunchy or deep or bright as the song needs.

You'll love your Changeling; and it's very responsive to just slight adjustments in EQ! Congrats.

Here's an email segment from Duke last May, likely before he selected the Changeling name:

"I wanted to let you know about a cab I'm working on that might be of interest to you. It's sort of like a hotrodded version of the Hathor 1203. Same woofer, same mid, same box size, but an additional rear-firing midrange driver. There will be a switch to bring down the level of the rear-firing mid by about 10 dB for situations where stage volume is an issue."

And Duke will very likely add to the discussion.
