AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Hello Bass players.

I did send an email to duke, with a few newbie questions, but no answer yet.
I sent it before I could find the club, and reading here I found out he’s having problem with Yahoo emails. Maybe he’ll never get the email.

Any help, will be great.

I’m interested on 2 - H1203 or Maybe the H212 but at the same time i got the dilema of a few people.
TC112 Vs H1203. I did read his website, and I’m reading here slowly as much as i can, but it’s long.

I don’t like voiced cabs, ( I mean, Really voiced )
But the dumb question is: How voiced is it the H1203?? Can it go more natural??

Another newbie question:
If i do Mix 1 TC112 and 1 H1203 do i get phase cancelation from each other???

Tks

My 2 cents...

I have both cabs but my TC112 is the version one model. Like others have said the TC112 is more polite in the mids. With that being said, I think the TC112 is more neutral sounding than the H1203, especially when driven hard. The 1203 will tend to get aggressive when hit really hard, while the TC112v1 does not. I love both cabs and I use them together frequently. No phase cancellation. I think they compliment each other very well. The TC112 is crystal clear and will give you extended lows and highs, while the 1203 has less on the low end but could get that nasty mid grind with the switches and when pushed.

as others have said, the tc112 seems to be more neutral than either the h1203 or the c112t.

i’d also say that it reacts to close diads/chord voicings differently than the hathor/changeling stuff, as i feel that you can really hear the overtones rubbing against each other a little more.

ime, the hathor/changeling stuff have both more apparent mids and highs.

as expected, tc112 seems to have more low extension, followed by the tall changeling and then the hathor.

I have never sat before a NS10M monitor, but have gathered that they sound flat and accurate which some find harsh and unpleasant...?
If they were flat and accurate people would not have been routinely putting absorptive material if front of the tweeters. What I saw most often was even more 'effective' than a paper towel...a sanitary napkin. That really did have a visual impact.

Ah, I see. Sounds effective and visually non-invasive. Thanks for explaining.

It's funny how NS10's were the industry standard to mix on for years. The tweeters were notorious for failing so you wound up doing a mod adding an inline fuse for more protection. Also, you had to guess on the low end on your mix as well because they did not produce low end at all... Yet everyone used them. Not many options back then. Through trial and error you basically learned how to use them and were able to feel where the bass would sit. Some people in the industry still swear by them. I used them for years too until I listened to Dyn's. Then it was game over lol.

The studios in which I saw them mostly only used them for secondary or near-field monitors...something to bring your perceptions back to reality after mixing on big monitors all night. They were the right size for perching on the meter bridge of a big console. They were a sort-of step up from what they replaced; before the NS-10 era, I saw a lot of Auratone 'Soundcubes' being used for near-field monitors. Neither was an especially accurate monitor--the Auratones had no HF response to speak of, and the NS-10's had too much for my taste, at least when listened to from just an arm-length away. As noted, they were pretty much an industry standard when there weren't too many choices for a small monitor speaker.

In the few times bands I’ve been in have ponied up for studio time, the control room always had a single Auralex centered on the meter bridge for checking mixes in mono. I am way out of that loop and don’t know dink about current monitors. Got to mix a project on some Genelecs once; those sounded good to me.

by the way, i want to be clear that my "mod" is in no way an indication of negative feelings about the ak stuff (i do have five ak cabs).

it's just that i'm a tweaker . . . consider that i've modded pretty much every fodera 6-string that i use since i've gotten them.

i love and rely on both things . . . but i do have my odd inclinations.

This is how I feel about the “cheater delete” on my Birdhaus also. Duke’s three-directions woofer and passive cheater boost circuit ideas seemed to work great to me but for my current situation there are enough “dirt overtones” that I prefer it without the cheater.

If I end up playing cleaner in some other setting in the future I might reconnect it, or install a cheater on/off switch in place of one of the
Speakons.

EDIT: just received another gig pic

The Birdhaus 48 and assorted rig components. My first gig (yesterday) as a bassist, at which I experienced multiple disorienting acoustic phenomenae for the first time but got through it. High winds, crazy loud PA, total dependence on the monitors. So, weird after getting so used to my one-cabinet basement practice sound...but got through it and still had fun.
