AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Can’t imagine ever letting go of my Hathors, though I rarely use both, or even one lately, but we have played in the parking lot of a local brewery a few times since July, strategically placed between the empty kegs and the dumpster.

I tried DI only but everyone prefers the cab. Sound guy says he likes what he gets out front with the cab in combination with PA. Crappy cell video:

Same video with IMovie processing and audio from touchmix feed:

My two C12Ts should be here next week ! Can't wait to have my own stupid grin!
Oh the anticipation.

I haven’t posted in a long time but I couldn’t be happier with my Hathor 2x12. It just works great for everything I do. I’ve had some great cabs (NV610t, Subway 15, 12, and 2x15) but the size, weight, volume and tone makes it the winner for me. When Duke made this for me I believe it was one of the first if not the first production H2x12.

How do you like the 4-Stroke with the H212? I've found it to be a good combination with one or two of the 112s -- clear, impactful, and easy enough to tweak if necessary -- though, lately, I've been running more with a Handbox R-400 (which has a tube front-end and a little more detail, native treble, and harmonic content, though the 4-Stroke kicks a little harder).

I love it! It’s such a muscular, loud and clean amp. It can push the Hathor as loud as I would ever need. It’s definitely got that “slam” that I’ve never got from all the class D amps I’ve had. I use it for all my live gigs, at least when I used to gig. I feel it’s very uncolored at least for an Orange and with the semi parametric EQ you can get a broad range of tones. If I need any color or dirt, I use pedals. The little GK is great for home practice but in a live situation it doesn’t even come close to the Orange.

Yeah... re. the "slam"/muscularity, that has been my experience (fortunately or unfortunately) vs. the many class D amps I've played (though some have done much better than others and have their own attractive features) and why, for the most part, I am rolling with class AB amps with linear power supplies these days (though said rolling is confined to home at the moment :/).

Others might and will have different takes and experiences and key-in on different things than I do. Cab/amp synergy matters too, of course.

Re. the 4-Stroke specifically, yeah -- cleaner, less colored, and more dynamic than I expected from an Orange. I dig the 4-band semi-parametric though I sometimes wish the bands were voiced a little wider. I also would prefer to be able to defeat the compressor entirely via the front panel (rather than needing the footswitch), though I like the feel with it dialed all the way down.

At any rate, I find its feel and voicing to play very well with the Hathors and, despite being rated for "only" 500 Watts RMS at 4 Ohms (~300 350 W* @ 8 Ohms), to push them admirably. They feel well-matched.

The 400 Watt (@ 4 Ohms) Handbox doesn't have quite the oomph of the 4-Stroke with the Hathors and will run out of steam before the cab runs out of room, but is still loud enough for plenty of smaller gigs, even with an active drummer, with a single cab, and sounds quite big with two (huge with three -- mine has the 2 Ohm mod -- though I've not gotten to try that live and the one outdoor gig, in August, where I thought I might was cancelled).

*Correction -- see two posts down.

Regarding the onboard compressor, I usually have it rolled off as I use a Smoothie on my board. I almost feel like the compressor acts as an input gain control and I use it as such like if I need a little more volume between the detents on the master knob I’ll turn the compressor up a bit. I don’t have much amp gas right now although the Mesa TT800 looks really cool.

Re. the compressor, here is what John Dines of Orange told me:

The reason it gets louder when you add compression is that is a fixed threshold optical circuit. Basically you're changing the volume into the compressor to get more compression, rather than lowering the threshold. It's the simplest and most old-fashioned way to do it (which is how we like to do things).
In that same email, he said that the 4-Stroke 500 makes about 350 Watts at 8 Ohms (not the 300 or so I quoted earlier).

Look what arrived today!
After quite a long wait my 2 changeling talls came and easily exceed my expectations.
The integration of the drivers and the voicing are just fabulous...
I am preaching to the Choir but how do cabs this small rock this hard and weigh so little?!

Oh man, that looks killer! I also use a Bass Block with my Changeling tall, I think it's a fantastic match with Duke's cabs! Enjoy!
