AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I was running my Hathor 1203 with two plugs in for a while, for home practice, then one plug for some small gigs at a brewery. Tonight I took out the one plug and went to a jam session, and it felt like I had restored thunder to the gods. Those port plugs make a huge difference!!

I've mainly been running it with the switches in "traditional" position, but now that I'm playing a bright, punchy 6-string bass some, it's time to see how the fuller-range voicing sounds.

Ppl have tried to sell me cabinets recently, and it's been effortless saying nah, I'm good. I've got my rig.

That's a mighty rig of thunder! And I don't know quite why, but it seems like Quilter heads are getting paired with Audiokinesis cabinets at a statistically outlying rate. I'm all BB800 to Hathor 1203 and am far from alone, let alone other cab offerings. Seems to me we're just a particularly discerning and decisive bunch.

+1 for this rig, it's what I have too.
And you're inspiring me yet again to get my Changeling a little brother (or sister) - not sure if I'd get a normal Hathor or Changeling, or another tall version. I'll be guided by Duke, the guy is a legend and knows his craft.

Yeah, although I'm 90% sure it'll be overkill 95% of the time, I'll definitely get in line for a second Changeling when Duke is all caught up on his outstanding orders. That combination must sound crazy good. Like you, not sure if I'll go tall or regular, but I bet you couldn't go wrong either way.

I'm going to grab a second Hather 1203 as soon as Duke is taking orders again, but I'm kind of debating about whether to get the tall or the standard.

I'm using a 76 PBass with flats for most of my shows these days, although I will occasionally gig with my Stingray 5. I don't necessarily feel like I'm lacking lows, but I'm kind of on the fence as to whether the little bit of low end bump is really going to make much of a difference or be useful in my situation.

For those of you using two Hathor 1203, did you go standard or tall, and how are you using the ports/switches when you use both cabs? If you've tried out both, what were your thoughts?

I own both, with the tall version also being a changeling.

I tend to bring the larger cab to acoustic gigs (oddly) because the rear-facing mids help in the setting. I usually play fully plugged and both switches down (no highs, smooth mids).

The tall version does have better lows, but I spend a lot of time trying to clamp down on lows for most of my bands so I can’t say it’s made a difference to me. I’ve found the normal Hathor to be slightly louder overall, but that might be in my head.

I already have one 1203 and I’m quite aware. Most of my gigs moving forward will probably only require a single cab. I just want that second one for festival gigs where I might want a little more push. There have definitely been situations where I’ve been pushing my single cab to its limits.

I think I may go with the tall anyway. It’ll probably be more useful as a single cab when I’m playing my Stingray 5, and it shouldn’t be too hard to tame the lows with a port plug in a two cab situation if I need to.

I'm "all in' on leaving my 1203 plugs "all out"!

The 4 ohm version of the Kappalite 3012LF has been discontinued. It is available by special order through Eminence's Custom Shop, at full retail + 13%.

The regular 8 ohm version has a bit more "grindy" in the upper mids than the 4 ohm version does, so if you like your 1203 with the bottom switch UP, you may prefer the 8 ohm version anyway.

Unfortunately I do not know of any suitable 4-ohm replacement woofers made by a different manufacturer. The Kappalites do a lot of things just right for electric bass, in my opinion.

I’m glad to hear it can be custom-ordered, not that I need a replacement for my TC 112 4 ohm yet. It’s one tough customer; maybe the most rugged bass speaker I’ve owned - and I’ve owned a LOT! I wouldn’t want a change.
