A piece of paper doesn't make you a real engineer, your work is what tells that story IMO. The world has plenty of people designing aircraft and related systems Duke, but there are very few people with your ability (or perhaps I should say gift) for producing bass cabinets as capable as your designs.And as an engineering school drop-out, I thank you very much for that comparison!
When I was a kid my dream was to become an aerospace engineer, but it was taking me three tries per math class and you can't get a degree like that. Not that anyone would want THAT guy designing their airplane.
One of the things I try to do is not have any one of the multiple inevitable limitations prematurely limit the entire system. So neither port compression nor excursion overload (fart-out) nor thermal compression sets in well before the others. And I try to find little things that can help here and there, like using flared ports which allow a higher air velocity before chuffing sets in, then putting those ports near the woofer's magnet, where that higher air velocity can contribute to cooling the motor.
The downside of this "balanced" approach is, less margin between the onset of audible distortion and something really bad happening, like the voice coil overheating and the magic smoke escaping. Fortunately to the best of my knowledge bass players who stumble across my high-priced cabs and buy one (new or used) are never beginners, as far as I can tell.
One more aerospace person wouldn't have made the kind of difference in that field that you have in the speaker cabinet world. On the other hand, I'll bet the luxury jet market folks would have loved to have had you designing high end passenger cabin sound systems!
