Anyone out there running a Genzler Magellan 800 with a Hathor 1203 or two? Just ordered one to replace my aging Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 and am super excited!
I've been buying Jeff Genzler's products since the old carpet covered white faced speaker cabinet days, so it feels good to upgrade and keep the tradition alive. I'm not replacing my Hathors, though!

Magellan 800 into a Hathor 1203T and Changling T. I sold my Mesa 800+ as the Magellan is more neutral especially for my fretless basses. Mesa is always the Mesa sound but fits me better most of the time. Going back to having both heads. If Ampeg only had an 800 product as good as these, sigh.

Yeah, I was going back and forth between the Genzler and the Mesa heads but definitely leaning towards Genzler for basically the same reason. I was still trying to decide when I got an email from Talkbass regarding them closing their online store and offering 20% off. At that point the decision was made.

So just recently I stumbled upon somewhat local AK Thunderchild 112 on Craigslist. I've only just begun to read through this thread but wondered about any TC's owners thoughts on the cab? I've been looking to get more into the amp/cab modeling world via a Helix or something similar, and I believe this could be a good choice for stage monitoring. If anyone has used this kind of setup I'd really appreciate opinions. Is it really as transparent and full-range as I've read. Supposedly it's a v4, which appears to be the most recent, and is definitely priced right. I was also considering a powered monitor of some kind but now I'm thinking this could be more appropriate.
I play four string though a Quilter BB800 with various effects fwiw. Currently I own a pair of GK Neo 112's which, to be honest, leave me wanting. Often I only require one cab. The Quilter is a very powerful amp and if the Thunderchild could take some more watts it might solve the overwhelming majority of my live performances and allow me to move my GK cabs. Any opinions would be great. Thanks!

You should buy it on general principal. I'm sure someone in the thread will take it off your hands if it doesn't work out for you (but of course it will).
I saw that listing and also think it’s a great deal. That does appear to be the latest version too.
I cannot speak for the TC’s from direct experience, but those are the OG of AudioKenisis badassery.
I have a Changling 112 and love it. It does not do the transparent, hi-fi thing that the TC does, but to your point, if you’re looking to profile a bunch of different tones, why not run it through something as transparent as possible.

I used some older school modeling gear with my TC112v1 pretty happily, but with things like guitar synth or highly distorted bass the tweeter would tend to run out of gas well before the rest of the system IME. Variable LPFs and/or higher quality cab sims are a lot more common these days though, plus the v4 cabs have a beefier compression driver specifically to make the cab better for applications like yours. As far as transparency, I used mine to run small open mics a few times and as a vocal monitor at reahearsals quite a bit. It killed in both cases. Well worth a shot if you have a good deal lined up, I’d say. I only sold my v1 cab off because this option became available:
Which I probably wouldn’t have wanted to haul around to gigs too often, but it’s the most fab living room practice thing ever.

My 4 ohm TC 112 is still my beefy 112, when I need more heft than a Changeling 112 8ohm brings to the stage. I don’t see how you could go wrong, as long as the driver is in good shape.
Thanks everyone for the response. Lots of high praise for the design of these cabs. I checked out the official specs and can't believe how small and light these things are! It's a good time for gearheads for sure. I'm still not sure how I'm going to proceed. I was just about to pull the trigger on a Helix before I stumbled across the Thunderchild. You guys haven't made it any easier but I'm grateful for the feedback.
Oh for sure, brother. Honestly if you're all about it you should do what you need to. I did get in touch with the seller and it'd be an hour and a half drive to check it out, and I'm working out of town all week.
I just realized that Duke is present on here. That's outstanding. I'm going to message him with some questions and inquire about a possible future build.
I've been reading through this thread tonight and there's a lot of great information and knowledge being shared. I'm getting a good education on how I may proceed with a modeling rig. I also checked out the Barefaced stuff but I'm always leary of proprietary drivers, especially coming from an overseas manufacturer. I don't mean to imply that Barefaced isn't great gear and a stand-up operation. Their reputation seems to be in great standing. It's just a hangup of mine and I like to buy domestically whenever possible.
