Audition Red Flag Time Again

My point was....

Look like you're into the music and loving it. That pic looks like you don't care about your band, the music, or the gig. I don't play wiht musicians who aren't passionate.

Really? Explain. How can you tell someones passion from one still pic? Are you rockin out every second on stage? Smiling? acting the part? being the song? Nobody does. Ever see Tom Petty play?

Ty didn't take that picture or post that pic. The OP did. And if that's the way he wishes represent himself, it's not Ty's fault if he takes it as looking bored. Personally, I wouldn't post a pic like that and talk about how passionate I am about music or how animated I am on stage.

I understand but what is a pic...really? I have seen awesome bands stand there like sticks and play their hearts out. The eagles never did anything but stand there and later sat on stools and they were great.
Most bass player don't move much unless its metal or punk since we are considered backline and need to stay back there out of the way :hmm:.

I would, I do it all the time:)

But, those guys don't go bragging about their stage presence either.

When you post something, you're open to critique whether you want it or not.

True, and you hardly even see Daryl Jones.

I'm a lot better at smiling and stage presence overall . I'm still working on it.

The fault was in taking an instant in time and using that instant to make a generalized statement about the person's entire band persona based on that one instant.

It's not a logical conclusion, which leads any reasonable and fair person to assume that the poster has some agenda to cast someone in a negative light for no readily apparent reason. Others who support the action make themselves appear to also have this childish agenda, but we who are here all the time know who those are...

When did Blue ever brag about being animated on stage or brag about his stage presence???

I'm trying not to get involved in these things anymore. I'm just saying that if someone posts a pic that doesn't portray them in a positive light, and then says things to the contrary, then the opinions that ensue might be justified.

We all make conclusions based on a moment in time. Band videos, recordings, photos, etc. are all just a moment in time that bands are judged on. If you can't handle being judged or ciriticized then a band is not for you, because every time you take the stage you are judged and if you take rehearsal and practice seriously, you will be criticized.

That's all, nothing personal to anyone. I'm sure I'm judged based on moments in time too.

I play mostly jazz. A red flag is lack of charts. There are exceptions of course.

I agree with this even for rock. If the band is an original band, they should be able to provide basic chord progression charts of the songs they want you to learn. Auditions are a two-way street. They need to put a little work into it also and show they are willing to make a transition smooth. This is especially important if they provide you with mediocre audio samples of their tunes that are poorly recorded. In any event, just because I have the ability to learn it by ear doesn't mean I should have to spend a bunch of time doing so for your audition. Provide charts to play along with.

I've found that rock bands who can't/won't provide charts for their original music either don't know how to make a simple chart, don't really even know what they're playing, or are simply lazy. They use the excuse that they want you to figure it out to see how good your ear is, but that's BS. Remember, you're not my only audition and you save me a lot of time and effort by simply providing basic charts. If you don't, I'm going to presume it's because you don't know how or you're lazy. I'm auditioning you too.

Having done this for a while, I've come to the conclusion you can't really make any conclusions until you meet the guys and jam. People will always have some type of shortcoming, so it's a matter of what you can live with. That's why finding a fit is so important for a long term project. In the end, a red flag is only a limitation, and we all have to live with limitations. I surely have plenty of limitations, but by grace I seem to find work. It's more a matter of fit.

But you don't want to waste time either.....
The #1 thing that I have found to be a good indicator of a band's potential is a song list. If it's an original band, a body of work such as recordings. From that you can determine if the material is something you would enjoy doing, and it shows they have put in some kind of work and planning.
The #2 thing is a phone call. It helps if a band can communicate and get along. You can't jam by text or e-mail, so you'll actually need to talk sooner or later. I find this to be a good screen.
If these 2 things jive with me, I'll go audition. The last time I did a bunch of auditions a couple of years ago, I asked for a song list. I did about 5-6 auditions, and none of them were time wasters. They were all bands that were playing out, had decent gear, a place to rehearse, material learned, etc. Nowadays on the occasional audition, I will still use those 2 criteria, and I still haven't had a waste of time.

For me, just because it isn't a fit, I don't consider it a waste of time. As long as I met some cool people, jammed some cool tunes, and didn't cost me too much, I consider it a positive. You don't always get a great fit, and it's not always a fault of the auditioner or auditionee, nor does there need to be a fault. People have limitations, and that means that there will be bad fits.
