for fretted, i like the Dunlop Super Bright Nickels - great for slap. nice low tension. no floppinz.

I actually threw my Fodera nickels on this bad boy yesterday and to my ears they sound MUCH better! Spent some considerable time with it last night and starting to find a few settings with the active pre that I'm digging...I really like the passive tone but I'm really trying to work with the pre at this point... Have a gig tonight that I considered taking this to but I may hold off for now. Thumbs up thus far on these Bacchus basses!

my first gig with my 24DX4 was crazy.

i play through a CabSim pedal into a Yamaha DSR115 (1300 watt) PA speaker.

good LORD the tone was insane.

especially with the OBP2 preamp.

I actually threw my Fodera nickels on this bad boy yesterday and to my ears they sound MUCH better! Spent some considerable time with it last night and starting to find a few settings with the active pre that I'm digging...I really like the passive tone but I'm really trying to work with the pre at this point... I just put some Foderas on my Moollon J today. They are the best strings to me. Even better than Sunbeams. I love them on jazz basses especially. You should be able to run flat with just a little boost in the highs and lows and be good to go.

It's been about two weeks now since I received my Craft Standard J5 and I can't put the darn thing down! I find the Sadowsky pre to be a little difficult to tame however. I've owned two metros in the past and liked them but with this bass it seems like it's almost too much. Very hi-fi sounding and scooped. So, I yanked the battery out and been running passive this last week and LOVING it...I may just be a passive guy at heart but to my ears the bass seems to have more character in passive mode. I'm able to cop more of those vintage JBass tones. The mids also came alive with a little noodling on the tone knob. Took it to my jazz quartet rehearsal last night and my guitarist really liked it. He said it cut quite very well and the notes were clear/articulate. I'm not giving up on the active mode just yet but so much easier to get "my sound" in passive. For those that own this model, thoughts and tips on the Sadowksy pre? Anyone have the Aguilar pre? Thanks in advance!

I have a Sad pre and I don't use it anymore. It is in the box . I have a Noble Preamp coming and that is really the sound for me. A warm tube that brings out the mids - perfect for a J or P. It also has EQ on it.

I had the Aguilar and it was pretty cool. Gooey I would say, but it's not a real tube so it doesn't have that harmonic depth. I did not like it much for a slap tone and the mids sounded a hair artificially gooey if you boosted them too much. It's still pretty sweet, but not the preamp I wanted. The Noble is, but it costs a lot. I sold one Bacchus (my craft 4 string) to fund it actually.

Hi, I have the Nordstrand 3B-4A pre with NJ5 70's wind pickups.
I never really liked preamps until I got this one.
The Bacchus DX are really clean sounding basses and IMHO the Nordstrand pre + pickups add all the possibilities I need.
Haven't tried any others installed in the Bacchus, but My amp EQ is Flat and I'm getting lots of different but usable sounds.

@Asaf I'm a definite nordy fan and will surely consider that 3B-4A pre when I am ready. This Sad pre is just not working for me...good thing I love the bass in passive . BTW sweet looking Bacchus ya got there!

I'm running mine through a GB Streamliner 900 w/Bag End and Eden cabs and thus far totally digging it!

Thats a great point. The Bacchus DX are truly clean sounding. Mine has a Bartolini pre so I get a little more hype out of it, plus it has big split style pickups, which are incredible. I think it will sound fantastic through a tube preamp, which is why I bought the Noble.

I have an Aguilar OBP2 in my Bacchus and an Aguilar OBP3 in my STR.

My fretless Bacchus has a J-Retro with Lindy Fralin hum cancelling Js.

Each are unique. Love the build quality of 'em all.

I use a cab sim pedal live into my DSR115.

Home recording, i use my GT-100 for a little NATURAL CLEAN with some compression. just a touch.

went with Presonus Studio One 3.2.2 - full steam ahead.

Folks, I have to acquire a 4 string P and as a result my 6 has to go. I used it a ton on records as a substitute for a Precision when someone asked for it, but for the live gigs I'll doing I need to go 4. Check my sig for a deal on a Bacchus 6. This is the highest quality Bacchus they offer.

I've only ever heard the terms "Sadowsky Japan" or "Sadowsky Tokyo" when the company talks about where their Metro Line basses are manufactured. It's a mystery. But it would make sense.

Currently the Metro Line are made by ESP Japan. Prior to that another very high grade OEM maker was contracted to produce them, however one can only speculate as to who that may have been.
Deviser has done and still does a lot of high end OEM so they would have been a contender for sure.

Does anyone here know what the model designation would be for a discontinued Bacchus Jazz Bass (plain Fender clone otherwise) with this kind of headstock?

That would most likely be a late 90's build, indeed the Clay Jiro signature was in this range...that may be a headstock for that very model actually.
