Baer Amplification Megathread!

I've put larger feet on my micro heads for quite sometime. But as I stated earlier, the handle on the ML-112 is sort of soft and rises above the the metal parts, so my amp rests on it. I don't mind it at all.

With most of the micro heads you'd probably want to stand the cab up vertically anyway to get the mid a little closer to your ears. Is there another handle on what would be the top of the cab in this orientation? I can't tell from the pictures on Rogers site.

Very cool. It will be nice to get more feedback on this great little cab. Two should be quite killer. I'll look forward to reading reviews from the guys getting these cabs, and also feedback from the New England GTG, where the cab I evaluated will be heading either today or Monday for that bash next weekend.

Hey, cool. I'm going to be at the New England GTG, and AFAIK there will be a Thunderchild 112AF and a couple of fEARful cabs there too. I've heard plenty of those though, so I'm especially looking forward to playing through the ML112 and comparing it to some other cabs in this class.

Roger: congrats on getting this cab to market, and best of luck with the others.

The handle is only on the top. The cab is light and balanced very well, so its an easy carry...even for me.

I alternate putting the box up or down depending on the gig but I personally like the box standing vertical.

...The direct price listed on the site is $650. It looks like Roger is doing free shipping for a while, and a discount on the cover.

I didn't catch this before, but it is incorrect and wanted clear this up. Right now, we are offering your choice of either $25 shipping anywhere in the lower 48, or $30 off on a padded cover when you order a ML112. I usually recommend which ever saves you the most money. This will probably run for a couple more weeks.

Thanks Charlie. I will definitely be interested in getting your feedback on the cabinet. I just may have to make it there there for next years event. Sounds like a great hang!

Sorry about that Roger. I misread that on your site. Hey, at least I didn't post that you were giving away free cabs and a discount on the shipping:p

So the ML112 arrived today.

I have to say hearing in person is not the same as over video (as one would expect)

I'm pretty impressed with punch of the little stout cabinet.
Its amazing the zing that it has without a tweeter.

I already jammed with just using ML112 against a single drummer that hits hard, 26" kick in a 800' sq warehouse/office space that has 12 high ceilings and it could hang.

As it has been said before, the upper mids are doing there own thing. If you like what the AE Berg line you mostly likely be a fan of the Baer ML112 but again the upper mids of the Baer still have its own stamp.

I tried a couple of heads (LMII and Harke LH1000) and a few basses (4&5 string Rays and 4 string J) The low B acted as expected with a cabinet in the class.

Looking forward to taking this to the NEGTG

Cool! Yes, punchy little beast, and a good bet for those who might have missed the AE boat! And, I didn't miss a tweeter at all, and I love tweeters!

Glad it got there OK!

I guess the only other point I would make is reiterating the point I made in response to RPSANDS.

The reason that most of my clips sound relatively similar is not 'by chance'. It is rather a result of a lot of pre screening of gear to find the combinations that optimally result in producing 'my tone' (which may or may not be liked by various players, of course). There is a TON of gear I try that does not make the cut, and I tend not to post clips of those combinations (although I do try to post about the good and the bad on various threads, based on 'IMO').

So, yes, like most, I sound 'pretty much like me' all the time, but I sound 'really like me' through some combinations, which is what I focus on. And, given that 'that tone' can be achieved through very different sized boxes and different price points, it all stays pretty interesting to me!

I, for one, love these clips...esp., after hearing a half dozen or more to get a real handle on what Ken is going for, tone-wise. Even though I go for a much different sound, I can listen to Ken play, with his tone, then interpret what that cab would sound like with my tone applied. As far as how 'subtle' these differences are...sure, they are, but that's kinda what it's come down to these days...tons of great gear that covers the sound, top to bottom, very very well. Heck, I never thought I'd see the day you could get such an awesome sound from such tiny bass gear!

The only question I'm left asking myself after the clips is, "That rig sounds awesome in Ken's house, but is it truly loud enough for my smaller gigs? Can I get deep enough lows for a medium volume upright gig?"

I have been watching these 'super 12' threads with great interest since my smallest cab is a GB Uber 212, and it's pushing 60lbs and not the best for upright gigs...my Uber 410 is pretty great for upright gigs, but a lot bigger and heavier that I need for some of the smaller gigs...or is it?:D

My guess is, if his experience is like mine, the B string response if very good for a single 112 cab (better than 80% of them), but of course, will not shake the house at high volumes. I really liked the low end of this cab... relatively tight and punchy like the AE410, but it does not break up or fart out when pushed hard.

Also, his comment about the cab 'sounding different than the clips' is a bit misleading I believe, since my clips sound EXACTLY like the cab sounds live with me playing it. I think what he meant is the cab sounds different with him playing it with his different amplification, different basses, and I'm sure different technique, tone goal and playing style. IMO!

Which is?

MM

Ok sorry if was not clear,:hiding: but I look at the ML112 as a higher end, small cab (Accugrove, Berg, ect)

With that being said I'm expecting the B string to be as clear and defined as any other string that I'm playing and it was.

To echo the previous statements, I think the ML112 would make a great substitute where one would be using a 2x10. Two of these would be a great modular set up if you need the volume.

Fixed it for ya. :smug:

Exactly (regarding the player anyway)! Amazing reproduction IMO of that single data point. That's why it would be cool if more people would do clips with various instruments, strings and expecially playing styles and tone goals. With these little digital recorders, it is pretty easy to provide pretty accurate ideas of the performance of a given piece of gear in a given context.

Room and mic location have pretty minimal impact (in my experience), unless you are recording in a cavernous gym or something, but player, and technique and tone goal are obviously pretty huge.

With mic location, IMO it is key to have the mic a decent amount away from the cab, and not directly on-axis. That gives you a pretty good feel for the general tone of the rig, again, for that player. The thing you don't want to do is put the mic very close to the speaker, which is not really representative of the sort of 'live performance' of the cab.

...

HOWEVER, I am going to strongly consider Roger's ML212 if he introduces it. That would be a wonderful large gig solution for my Streamliner and P Bass, and might very well take the plunge. I've never been a two cab type of guy, but the 4ohm 212 version of this cab, with those two mid drivers stacked in that vertical array thing..... I might have to get out my checkbook for that one:eek::bassist:

I'd love to try that cab out (but with Roger B's amp & my SR5 H).

Hey Charlie I hope you are combining a visit to the Upton Bass shop with the TB NEGTG, maybe Upton will have a presence at the GTG, too.

Hi Ken
I hope to have a few people on tape tomorrow playing through it...
Should be a good time at the GTG.
