Baer Amplification Megathread!

Hey, doesn't Tom play in a band called "Pumping Ethel"? A simply brilliant name, if ever I've heard one. I do quite like Questionable Pork, though. Would make a great double bill with Tom's band!

Thanks! Though it's "Ethyl," not "Ethel," you perv. :smug: :p :D

Mr B, that's quite a sensible backline you have there, I was expecting to see a Bergscraper on stage !

This was a multi-band benefit event, and we were the headliner, so there was already a rig on stage (GC-brand Acoustic head and 8x10). Not knowing what I would encounter for a backline, I brought along a little friend which you may recognize...

...the Time when you experiment with Preamp tubes to optimize your amp the day of the gig. :rollno:

I was so excited to get to the gig and check out my recent acquisition of a Baer ML112, and really check it out in a brand new venue. This was a place I've been wanting to book for a while. Finally got in.

So I plug in 15 minutes before downbeat and ..., Pfffft, NO SOUND! :eyebrow: ...Played bass thru the PA the first set. Arrrgh. (The Audience said it sounds fine and the mix was good.) But I "KNEW" what they were not hearing and missing.

I plugged into a QSC K10 Powered Speaker after first set. I happened to bring it in case we needed an extra monitor.... Not knowing I "Needed" it for my Bass the rest of the night.

Popped the lid on my amp today and realize the brand new Tung Sol 12ax7 in V1 was cooked. Maybe the vacuum seal broke? Dunno. But it looked like it cooked internally.

Replaced bad tube today with an old stock RCA 12ax7 and it sounds great. Tested, put cover back on, retested, all is good.

Heading to a gig now with Baer ML112 and amp. ...and a spare amp just in case! Whew.

It's good practice to have a spare preamp tube or two on hand, if you regularly gig out with gear that uses tubes. If you bring a small tool box of fishing tackle box with some gear essentials to each show, throw a basic 12AX7 or two (sufficiently padded, of course) in there.

With the cost of some of these lower powered micro heads being so low, I think it's a good idea to pick a used one up new for a couple hundred bucks and carry it in your gig bag for emergency use. They are so small and cheap these days, there's no reason to ever be without a backup amp anymore.

Not a bad idea about packing a small micro head. I DID have a couple spare tubes, but once At the gig it was better to start on time and then work on plan B on first break . With friends and fans in the audience, it was easier to use my powered speaker and work the room rather than play amp tech. Got it fixed today and the gig tonight went without a hiccup. Sounded great.

I am enjoying the ML112 very much.

This is why I am SO happy I've found amps without any tubes that I really like.

If i were big show gigging regularly i think id look into a pair of micro heads and a pair of 112s with a simple passive splitter ahead of them ... if a head fries midsong you can still finish, then go plug the pair of speakers into the working head. JDI to FOH then the only point of failure is the (active) bass.

Kind of overkill imho. I carry a spare amp in the car, and I always gig with 2 basses. The only spare thing I don't bring is a cabinet (unless I'm playing a larger room and I've got two).

No spare for myself. I had a clone made once but it kept clapping on 1 and 3 so I can't send it on gigs...
