Baer Amplification Megathread!

I'd actually love a tiny 1x10 + mid cab for practice use, preferably something in a really nicely finished hardwood cabinet. I may end up building (or more accurately, teach myself how to build) one myself, though - probably not much market for something like that.

This sounds like Greenboy's Fearless 110, which includes a high excursion 10" driver, a 5" mid range, and a tweeter. But it's not a "practice" cab. Can take 500+ watts and hit a volume level above a standard 210, and hit the volume range of a super 12.

What news on the Valkyries?

The first small production run of 10 is being built now. We have the new chassis and circuit boards in now and we are gathering all the components needed to load the boards, which is a huge project in itself.

All aluminum chassis with the final silkscreening. Looks fairly simple, but it's really a very complicated thing to engineer and build. Lots of holes, board stand offs and mounting hardware. Everything is laid out to the 1/1000 of an inch.

New circuit boards. I though red might be a nice touch, as we lost the red front panels. It takes a lot of parts to load these all up!

I'm not usually the type to say this sort of thing out loud, but those red circuit boards are dead sexy. Like knowing a woman as brightly coloured undergarments beneath her plain black dress.

Are you hand soldering those things Roger? That's going to take some time and patience!

We will be using a PCB assembly house for the boards. They have far more expertise than I do. They do have to hand load every single part though, as the entire amp is made with through hole components. There's not one surface mount part on the entire amp. After hand loading, they put the boards through a wave solder machine and then through a washing process to clean the boards. After wave soldering, they then have to go back and hand solder all the things like the pots, switches, etc, that can't be washed. The power amp is double sided with the output devices on the bottom, so all those are soldered by hand. After the boards are completed, they are checked with a machine that scans every single part on the boards for any errors with a video camera and compares that with a known "golden board". Boards are then X-ray checked as well.

It's really a lot of work to make an amp this way, but there's no cutting corners if you want it done right. By the way, the chassis, front panels and PCB's are done right here in California. Every piece of this amp that that can realistically be made here, will be made here. Once all the parts are fabricated, final assembly will happen here as well. There's no getting around the fact that many of the parts come from overseas, but we are trying to do as much as we can right here in the USA.

Wow! Thanks for all the deets Roger. I was wondering if you were going to sub it out. I was kind of joking, as I remember many moons ago working as a summer intern in engineering and actually hand soldering components! Of course that was before dinosaurs! So I figured there was a better way that is actually within reach of a small start-up business.
