Good questions kirk, a number of years ago I ran a S15XD/S15D stack it was a fabulous combo and the cubes while not ultra light were easy to move around. While the D12D a friend was using on paper seemed to be a great solution it never provided the low end I wanted. I believe you said earlier the cab design of the S15 rolls off the sub lows in a way that sounds much better, to my ear it really does compared to a HPF. I find that same natural roll off in a sealed cab to be very pleasing. The Bag End stack was a long time ago now probably ten years, ultimately I swapped out the head I was using for something that didn't pair so well with the BEs.
I don't really care about what my amp looks like and for the most part a black box under the amp is fine but I have always thought the oiled birch Bag Ends look really cool.
