That was me, I started with an S12 on an S15 in the early 90s... best modular / portable rig of the day. 15 or so years back I was looking to order a S18B-B and a D12 built in the same dimensions as the S18B-B. in the end I went with the stock D12-B. 2 years back I ordered a second D12-B and dig the vertical array of 12" drivers... BUT I still really want the 18". I'm figuring running a D12-B with the S18B-B powered by my 200 watt tube head and keep the other D12-B for use with my 40 watt tube (guitar and bass set up)

That is the cabinet but in Oiled Birch with plastic corners (like my pair of D12) not Deep Red. I want the big box 18" with the removable port cover.

I saw an old pair of birch 18's at an Austin bass store(Bass Emporium?) a couple of decades ago. They were sealed cabs if I remember correctly. I inquired about them but I don't think they really wanted to sell them. They were also about 80lbs with no handles, so they'd be hard to move.

The large box 15 and 18 have a removable port covers... and handles, but like my D12 they are 75lbs+ :)

I still haven't heard back from Jim

Yeah, they've had ports with covers for years. I had a 'jones' to maybe purchase some, but... These were really old and beat up from touring. Looked like the old Alembic cabs from back in the day. Please let us know what Jim says.

yeah, those early ones have a certain mojo to them. I just re emailed him in case he missed my first one. If I don't hear back by Monday, I'll just pick up the phone... but I end up forgetting 1/2 the info so I prefer the written response.

This is a custom ordered PS15LX-N cabinet. I can use internal power amp or connect an external head. There is a switch inside the cabinet that allows this to happen. Bag End does a great job with this.

@57pbass THIS is the kinda post that demands TB have a 'love' reaction... Ashdown & Bag End are a killer combo.


I'm still waiting on Jim, he offered up the CDS-18 NEPTUNE, but not if it can be loaded with a full range speaker, or could be acquired in oiled birch. He is travelling over the holiday... so I hope to have a conversation later in the week.

very massive and overkill... I may end up with an S15B-B, but my first real rig was a 4x12 + a 1x18" PA sub and for a new 'for fun' project I'm hoping to relive my youth :P My favorite drummer is relocating back to my area this summer and we've got a crazy idea of reliving our late 80s angry stoner funk blues days.

That sounds great and I hope you’re able to relive those days… that Neptune cab looks amazing but has some serious weight.

I'm going to tentatively ask this question just for fun. I saw a 10" elf subwoofer at a pawn shop recently and found some info on it (but not a lot), and a few people saying they sounded good as a small bass cab, despite not having much high end. Since I understand how they were meant to be used, I'm skeptical ;-) It's in great condition though. Anyone use one for a bass cab?

I suggest trying before you buy. ELF cabs are sealed and designed to work below resonance. I believe resonance is approximately 80hz.

Below resonance sealed cabs roll off at a rate of 12dB per octave. To get flat response the signal is boosted by a rate of 12dB per octave. The ramification is the sensitivity drops off at a rate of 12dB per octave.

The boost is provided by proprietary Bag End processor/Crossover. Keep in mind, each time you apply 3dB of boost, the power must double. Therefore, 12dB of boost means the power is doubled 4 times.

Bag End now calls the ELF cabs INFRA. Here is the specs for the current S10E-I

As you see this cab produces pretty modest output at 80hz, and the output drops quickly as the frequency goes lower.

I read all that, but some people have said that without the ELF rackmount deal, it pretty much sounds like a bass cab. It's in a pawn shop, so I'm not sure how cooperative they would be as far as letting me mess around with it. If someone I know here at Talkbass had tried it and thought it was reasonable, I'd go through the trouble, but as it is I'll just see if it keeps dropping in price and maybe pick it up if it gets super cheap. I have read that it's a very mediocre sub, used as a traditional sub, and I believe that for sure. I think the 10" may have been made for Home Theater use, which makes more sense, imho. Who wants 8hz at a gig?. Plus it apparently takes several 18" subs to get much usable volume out of ELF, so how many 10" ones would it take? Probably 4 of them for a "Rave" in someone's bedroom. Anyway...

You can always reach out to Bag End directly..they’re pretty responsive to customer inquires..

definitely reach out... I'm excited to order the new cab... it isn't about wanting down to 8hz, it is having a secondary cab that 'fill in' the range of my basses with more fullness and body.

I do agree for weekend warrior stages, it will just muddy the stage. I'm looking for an outdoor / large space instrumental rig without PA support.
