Bands that have two bass players

There was an amazing band from Japan called the Pugs that had two bass players... One for "earth bass" and one for "space bass" ... so they weren't occupying the same sonic territory.

I play with a noise/performance art/chaos ensemble called Uberkunst that sometimes has a dozen or so people onstage at once, and occasionally we've done the two bass thing.

That's me on the right with the Hondo faux-Rickenbacker, and the other bassist Ian (who often brings a beater bass just to smash up at the end of the show) is behind the guy in the thong who's beating on the oil drum:

(This must be us playing "Ultimate War Machine," because our leader/frontman/vocalist and main percussionist have changed places...)

Who is this Jesus Fist? I'm really curious to hear/see them!

Uberkunst isn't really a musically interesting "band"... but it's very entertaining to watch. It's more of something to see and hear rather than listen to. It's a whole lot of fun to be a member of the group or an audience member. Lots of violence, sparks, flying debris, smoke, fireworks, etc. Total silliness. Audience participation is encouraged. When we did shows with two simultaneous bass guitars, it didn't sound especially magical or musical, it was just more bizarre.

Miles Davis, Bitches Brew and some of the later Coltrane stuff had two bassists. Later on Miles had some dude named Foley on 'lead bass' though he really seemed to occupy the role of a guitar player, and used a piccolo bass. Hmmm, piccolo bass ......kinda defeats the purpose in my book.

there was a fairly silly metalcore band from Germany called Morser that used to tour the states a lot back around '99 or so... they had two basses going in tandem, one insanely distorted and used for lead riffs and the other with a monstrous bottom end for the rhythm. they also featured a drummer, a guitar player and 4 singers (none of whom played a secondary instrument).

at one show i saw one of the four singers had lost his visa and had to go home... but the band just soldiered on... i sure couldn't tell the difference!

Ned's Atomic Dustbin did something similar. One guy played the low end stuff. The other guy mostly played chords way up high on the neck, and used a very treble-y tone on his Ric.
Check out their song "Happy" for a prime example.

Also, according to Wooten when I saw him, everybody in his band plays bass. During the show there were times when 2 or 3 basses were going at the same time.
Of course, if I were touring with Wooten I'd try to cop a few lessons too :D
