Did you catch the "Yanks must win this series or Joe goes" articles.

After watching "The Bronx is Burning;" this looks to me like one of those George quotes that are designed to motivate the players (I can see the players meeting - Gee guys, we need to win this so Joe can keep his job! :rollno:). If the Yanks do pull this off, watch George take all the credit. The thing that George doesn't realize is that his players are motivated and well-managed; whether they go to the ALCS will be determined on the field with the Yanks trying their best to win and the Indians trying their best to win. George's braying has as much to do with Yankee wins and losses as the rooster's crowing has to do with the sun rising. Of course, the interesting thing to see is that if the Indians win, will George actually fire Torre.

I'd like to see both of these teams back next year. Sometimes you need to go to the playoffs a few times before breaking through.

i think the phillies will havea good shot of winning the east again next year, although you can never rule out bobby cox, and the mets arent terrible despite glavine and pedro both getting old.


i cant wait to see if the rockies stay hot, and im pumped for the red sox game today....still cant get over manny's homer the other night...just awesome.

The Sox game was fun - good to see Schill in control and the heart of the order hitting the big fly.

Try to be nice to the Yankee fans at work; they are still down 2-1; but they are still alive. That team reminds me of the Bring out your dead scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail when a guy was trying to dump a body on the cart and then you hear a soft voice saying - "I'm not dead yet" "He says he's not dead" "Well he will be soon, he's very ill" "I'm getting better" "No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment"

Turns out that since the start of wild card play there have been 2 sweeps in a few previous Division Series but never 3, so the Sox are part of new record.

Turns out I was right about Roger, right on the Yankees' finding their bats although I was a little high on the score. Wrong about the Jets and Giants.

Well, it looks like we'll have to wait at least one more night to find out whats going to happen in the ALCS. Every other series was swept in 3 games, but the Yankees had to go and be difficult...:D

So true - and who is emerging as the leader of the beleaguered pinstripers; but the former Idiot-in-Chief Johnny Damon. As long as he is even semi-healthy, he is worth the money George shelled out for him. His postitive attitude is infectious and he was a huge part of Reversing the Curse. If anyone can put a team psyche on his shoulders and bring them back from the brink of elimination it is Damon.

FWIW - I was wrong again (big surprise, I know :rollno:); there was a big article in the Boston Globe about how the players (especially Johnny) did take George's challenge to heart and are playing for Joe.

Wang over Mussina for tonight's start - what is the feeling in Gotham over this move? Any experience with Wang on short rest? Will he be able to throw his sinker for strikes or will it be moving all over the place?

that's what I expected and wanted. he had too much rest the last time. he was too strong and the ball stayed up. I would expect (and I hope for) better results from Wang tonight.
(Like 8 innings of shutout, yeah, that would work for me.)

Thanks, gives me something to watch for - if he can get strikes with it either with great movement and the Indians swinging and missing or if the control is good enough to get some called strikes; the Yanks may force a game 5.

You might need the 8 innings of shutout - Joba went 2 innings last night and 38 pitches.
Do the Joba rules go out the window when your job is on the line? I would be tempted, but I don't think Joe wants the job bad enough to put the kid at risk.

I'm torn; while I understand why Wang is getting the ball, Moose was 3-0 in his last 5 starts, and in 4 of them looked pretty darn good. He's also fully rested. I'm guess he'll come out of the bullpen if needed tonight.

Easy guys, we are heading into "Be careful what you wish for" territory.

The Sox and Indians are playing good ball so it will be an interesting series.

Although the Sox won the season series against the Indians 5-2. Only 3 games were started by Sabathia, Carmona or Byrd and in those the Sox scored a total of 6 runs and dropped two - one of which was a shutout with Carmona going 8 strong innings (Beckett was the hard luck loser in that one giving up 1 run in 8 innings). The good news is that Dice-K won a 1-0 game when matched up with Sabathia and both Beckett (2 ER in 7 innings) and Schilling (1 ER in 7 innings) were effective in their wins against the Indians.
