Baseball season 2007

Oh, I'm not counting my eggs yet. This has been a great weekend of baseball for me and sox fans everywhere. We all know the Indians will be a force to be reckoned with. I'm just glad that I won't be watching yet another Sox/Yankees ALCS. I was getting tired of those. :D

AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Awesome. The Yanks made a decent try late, but just not enough. Jeter getting booed by the NY home crowd absolutely made my night. Looks like we're in for an interesting late October.

I said somewhere earlier in this thread, and I'll repeat here: IMO, this has been THE most exciting baseball season I think I've ever seen. It would have been beautiful to see the Cubbies cap it off, but it'll be even better next year when they can do it on the 100-year anniversary of their last WS, and with A-Rod anchoring the left side of the infield. ;)

It looks like the Yanks have the potential to lose quite a bit of manpower: Torre, ARod, Abreu, Rivera, etc. What are y'all's thoughts on this? Any free agents y'all are going to be watching to make a move? Will Glavine be a Brave next year? Where is Andruw going to go?

Really glad to see the Yankees on the first round exit, if for no other reason than to laugh at "I wanna play for a winner" Clemens go home as the Sox advance.

Ricket had his chance to exit on a story book ending to a super carreer by playing on the best team in baseball ,the one he spent most of his career with, only to toss it aside for greed. :spit: Way to go Rog, limping off into the sunset as a loser. But hey you have the money right ?

I myself hope to see the Yankees next year go younger. I hated the fact that they signed Clemens. Like we couldn't have gotten the same results from the farm system?

If Joe goes, I'm OK with it. He's had a great time here. he deserves better than george's rants. we all deserve better than george's rants and idiotic free agent signings.

The Yankees should however sign Posada and Mariano. they deserve to be here.

We lost to Cleveland with Arod, we can lose to Cleveland or whoever without him. While I cheer for him while he's here, it's because of the uniform, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him go. If anything, get a true number 1 starter. for pete's sake, byrd outpitched wang.

Abreu I'm not sure about. very hot/cold.

I like Meinkewicz or however the hell he spells it. I'll just call him Doug. Keep him. good glove.

Matsui: does he intend to ever hit again?

here's my yankee lineup for next year:

1.Damon (I like him, good guy)
2.Jeter (terrible post season this year. oh well)

I'll call him a loser or what ever else I deem appropriate for a "man" that lied to everyone about his real reasons for returning . Then turns around and thumbs his nose at his best retirement exit for the sake of a buck.

Why does my negative view of how Clemens ends his career have anything to do with "growing up". Some of us baseball fans are old enough to remember his entire career too and all the drama it encompassed. Piss off.

unfortunately, it's just how the game is. and please don't blame the Yankees. it's just how business is today.

fwiw, Clemens pitched pretty much exactly as I thought he would for the season. what a waste of money.

But the fact remains that Roger Clemens is one of the top five pitchers of all time, no matter how you slice it. He certainly isn't my favorite (I think Randy Johnson is more impressive), but he was absolutely dominant for many, many long seasons. Is he greedy? Sure. But if you were one of the best pitchers of all time, and had people telling you that for twenty years, don't you think you'd take the money over some sort of "loyalty" to a team? Loyalty is baseball is overrated and leads to bad decisions, both from management and players.

I'm not disputing Clemen's accomplishments on the field in years past. I've always said he's one of the best pitchers of the modern era. Hell, I was at Fenway when he performed record acheivements. Watched him from day one actually. I also remember all he said and then did too subsequently throughout his career.

For some fans character still means something. While I acknowledge moneyball as the senseless greed that it is, does it mean everyone must worship at it's alter ?

In Roger's case he did not even give Boston a chance to counter the Yanks offer, so greed couldn't be the only motivator. As a Sox fan how do you think I should view this slap in the face ? He got what he deserved this year as a result of his decisions. Hang that head low Rog you sir are a heel.

I'm not advocating blind loyalty, except when it comes to the Red Sox.;)

easy to say without knowing all the facts; which I don't claim to know either. but one thing I do know myself is that we fans are the loyal ones. neither the players nor management is.

but regarding what you wrote; you specifically said "greed couldn't be the only motivator". has it occured to you that management turned him off somehow? business goes both ways, just like emotions do.

Regarding Roger - I always thought the prospect of him actually coming to the Sox and the Sox actually really wanting him here was pretty remote. I imagine (or maybe hope) that they offered him Wakefield money prorated - something in the ballpark of what a wealthy team might pay a fourth starter - say $10-11,000,000 prorated. That the Sox extended an olive branch of sorts and that Roger even gave it a moments consideration is reconciliation enough for me. I still maintain that ESPN's Bill Simmons classic "Is Roger the Anti-Christ" column espressed my thoughts the best. The funny thing to me is that the Yankees seemed to be negotiating against themselves for his services (and won:hyper: ;)).

Steinbrenner has set the bar too high with a World Series victory as the only standard of success and too many fans bought into it. If you can't enjoy the kind of ball that the Yankees played since late May, then I can't feel that bad for you that you think the season was a disaster because of an early round exit.

Crusader is right about taking the opportunity to go young. The Yankees may also want to reconsider their policy of offering more years to older players. You have Giambi for another year at $21,000,000.

Will Pettite, Posada and Riveria come back if Torre is not there? All are wealthy men and don't need the aggravation.
Abreu is a club option for $16,000,000 - if they fire Torre and A-Rod walks, the Yanks may need to pick this up so they retain some power.

I kind of agree with you. Nolan Ryan never won a Series (or a Cy Young for that matter). But the fact remains that his stuff was absolutely filthy and molten for a long time.

As far as "big game" pitchers go, I think the Red Sox have the best one in the game on their rotation right now. In fact, Schilling and Randy Johnson to me are the two ultimate pitchers, who have great stuff that only gets better in October. Roger wasn't quite that kind of guy, but then again neither was Nolan Ryan.

Granted, he only had one ring...but his team's other playoff appearances were hardly his fault...

In 58.2 innings of Postseason ball: 63 K's: 14 BB's. <That's a good stat...2-4 record-meh. Not bad with an overall 3.07 ERA...he gave up no hits or runs with 2 walks to get the save in his only world series appearance...kinda studly.

I see what you're saying but he doesn't have enough playoff history to compare him to Roger in that aspect. Since he had 7 no-hitter's...I'd be more apt to say he "made" big games because his teams were never that special...

Mark my words - watch out for Verlander next year. He's only gotten better after his 17 win rookie season. He stayed healthy all year but had a mechanical problem during a stretch in July, where he racked up maybe two bad performances. His stuff is downright dominant - what other pitcher has hit 102 on the gun in his 8th inning? His curveball is devastating.

And by the way, looks like the Tigers are holding onto Pudge for one more year. What a waste of money.

Schill and Dice-K got flipped-flopped.

Beckett, Schilling, Dice-K, Wakefield with Lester ready to come out of the bullpen.

Beckett and Schilling seemed locked in. Dice-K was a little shaky in his first MLB postseason start but with that experience and plenty of rest, he could be very tough if he just trusts his stuff. Wake is Wake - the knuckler is either dancing or its not. Usually you can tell pretty early and the Sox could get Lester in there, if the knuckler is not moving.

Cleveland may have a slight edge in the 1-2 guys; but the Sox have much better 3 and 4 guys and Manny is as locked in as he has been all season and Papi is probably as healthy as he has been all year.

Those first two games may go to the first team that scores 2 runs. If any games figure to be classic pitchers' duels, it is those two.
