bass players selling out

What I saw the bassist doing was musical masturbation. He was gettin' off, but no one else was. I can appreciate the technical ability of someone shredding on a six string bass ... for about a minute or so ... and then I wanna hear some real music.

so it is real music when it is the guitar or the piano doing a solo ???

The way the music is made now it is always about a voice doing a solo ... the band just back up a solo/lead ... everytime you play being a singer, he/she do somewhat of a solo while you back it up, then a guitar solo occur ... you still back up the soloist.

I'm not the one placing limititations on anything - the role I'm talking about is simply what most bandleaders and producers want. It doesn't mean you can't stretch or be heard - it depends on the music and the context. And I'd never suggest that a bass player isn't an "equal member of a band".

A goof on pop music vs solo..........We all choose to do what we want to do........
There really is no such thing as "selling out", anyone who tells you different just wants
to rant about their lack of success and bitch about someone else's...........

Rule #1 in this world: Success does not come to you (whomever you are), you gotta go out and get it. Now there are a few exceptions, but for the most part, these exceptions have better ways and means than most do.........(famous parents or family)

I guess the term "sell out" means different things to different people these days...

I always took it to mean someone who compromises their principles or what have you to no end just to make a buck. Like "I'll play/wear/say/do anything you want me to, just please let me play music!" They would have no standards or personal limits at all. YMMV because everyone has different views on what is important or right/wrong, but I can honestly say there would be a "line" to what I would do to make a buck as a musician.

6 figures to back Bieber? Yeah I'd probably do that lol...nobody would know who I am or that I even exist on stage, so what would I have to worry about? I'd just hate having to hear/play the same songs every night for weeks on end, but if the money is good I could deal :cool:

Well the music business is a business. If your product isnt selling, then no one is going to pay you for it. People getting into the business forget that its a business and think they deserve all the accoutrements just because they are "artists" with integrity and limits blah blah. Its supply and demand and if I didnt want to "sell out" I wouldnt get into this line of business. Is your normal daytime job all about integrity and personal limits and you get to say what you want to do to your boss??? Or you do what needs to be done so you get a paycheck to pay the bills?

BTDubs...Im all about selling out!

I wouldn't mind backing Bieber either. In fact, if I was asked to stand in for one show, I would do it for free if he would agree to talk with my God-daughter on the phone for a few minutes. She would absolutely freak out, and that would make me the coolest uncle ever! Hehe

The other thing that alot of folks don't get about Artist's, is the fact that not just people's personality changes, but also the industry changes.........sometimes they don't change simultaneously, but that's the thing about evolving as an artist, if you don't grow, you stay exactly the same.....you gotta grow.

I think people didn't get the point of the post or video. In the video I am playing a part that could be considered semi complicated or semi interesting assuming that people would appreciate it. Then my friend plays a very (very) simple progression with very simple lyrics and people go for it and he makes money. Then after seeing that I try to emulate what he is doing playing guitar as bad as i could and singing as bad as i could and people still like it. Its social commentary people, social commentary. What I was trying to say is that people will go for anything these days even if its not good quality kinda like sheep mentality. I know I am generalizing and exaggerating but i only did that to get the point across and hopefully make some of you laugh.

The general audience of today has been dumbed down, musically-speaking. As a result of reality shows... Viewers see on a regular basis, the more technically talented performers are always booted off in place of the person that is more popular. Ever notice how the classically trained, opera-style singers are either ignored completely or booted off in early rounds? In fact, in many cases, they're auditions are included only in the blooper-reels.

Side note: Any voting system where one person can vote multiple times is not democtratic.

Well, I wouldn't say that opera vocals necessarily have no future. If civilization ever collapses and we have no more electricity to power PAs, those singing really loudly with no microphone skills will come in handy.

This is how I see it too. Some People really do love mainstream music like Justin Bieber ... other people will play it only because their is enough digit on the check

To me they are way more talented. They have mastered vibrato, they are able to sing what is on the sheet of paper and they have more dynamic than what we hear now.

Now their is never a vibrato, no lyricism and have a very limited range of singing.
