No that's not right. The difference between the Mod and straight is quite minor, but you CAN hear it. Which is why I mentioned it. You set the discussion on humbuckers for some reason and we are going along. But with the mod in my G&L it's sort of like a Jazz in that you can set it to use half the neck pickup and half the bridge pickup which gives you humbucking action like a jazz with both pickups on full. But don't sweat it because the change in tone is not all that great and of course if you set it for just one single coil it hums like all single coils. If you search the net you'll find that people do this mod and there are several choices as to how to do it. The usual mod replaces the series/parallel switch with a 3 position switch that gives series/single coil/ parallel.

Oh...Now I understand. I do have a jazz already so I wanted to add a different sound (humbuckers) to my arsenal. This is an example of the cutting tone I want to get out of my next bass.

well it looks like that guy is playing a stingray to me (its hard to tell) so why not look for a used stingray?
Of the three choices, get the L-2000. However, used stingray would be good, and of course, a Bongo will rule them all!
gibson ripper for rock tone, stingray HH for a different rock tone.

If you want an inexpensive (and passive) solution to switching from Single Coil to Humbucking, check out a Peavey T-40. You can pick up a used one for <$300. They're a lot of fun and can probably do anything you need it to do.
I have an L2k Tribute. Great bass, and it does cut through anything that needs to be cut through. I have not found the need to mod it yet.

I noticed you put the Kingston Artist but why not try the Kingston Heir?

I don't like the look. I barely like the Artist but I figured I would get used to it if I bought it.
I have a Standard p-bass and I'm usually overpowering a drummer, 2 guitarists, and a second bassist. P-Bass' are metal.

Lakland 55-07....double humbucking CHIsonic pickups that can be switched to single coil at the flick of a switch...GREAT preamp with switchable mids....I nicknamed mine "rolling Thunda"....no problem cutting through.....

The used market is your excellent, excellent friend right now. I'm thinking you could get a US G&L for under $800, just as an example.
G&L L2K or L2K5 then; either a used USA or a Tribute and you'll be fine.
Also, used Tributes usually go for around $350, so you will have some money left over.
