in the late '60's i was a hippie, but by the late '70s or early 80's, clean was where the money was in my world. i've never shaved my beard (from ~1974-75), but i've worn it at various lengths over the years depending on what part of the "rebellion/conformity" spectrum i was 'infiltrating' at the time. :D and of course, the color has changed. :wideyed:

:laugh: i laugh because my wife wants to braid my "shaving cream" beard, but i don't think it's long enough yet for that stunt. although i see how brave/rebellious you are/were! good show! :thumbsup: i think the true test, at our age, is whether you'd go to kroger with a 'specific' look! :roflmao:

Typical growth since 2005, though more white creeps in every day.

A slip of the trimmer on Mothers Day led to something other than a full beard—a goatee and stubble—for the first time in 18 years. I don’t hate it—I look ready to take over for Eerie Von in Danzig in 1994—but I’m growing it back.

I will try to track down peak beard and share it here, but I don’t intend to go huge again. While I can grow it big quickly, it doesn’t do braids or handlebars; when the individual hairs start tying themselves in knots, I lose patience with it.

Before 2020 upended my life along with those of so many others, I had happily settled into a career as a park ranger on the coast of California. I worked in a huge district with hundreds of volunteers and the staff put on an elaborate show for them at the end of every busy summer season. In 2019, our show took place under the sea so I got to perform as Ranger Merman, complete with a trident bass (went with the Ibanez MiKro to make my muscle suit look EVEN BIGGER). My then-six-year-old approved. Best-paid gig on bass I’ve ever played :laugh:

I have worn a beard for several years but I trim it before it gets long. I have to say that I look extremely sexy with a close-cropped beard (because nobody else will make that statement about me.) How, or if, someone else wears a beard doesn't much matter to me other than as a spectator.

I was living on the road in 1971 and let my beard do what ever it wanted. It was red at the time.
A friend insisted that we stay at his parents house in Houston, Texas. Stayed with him and his parents for about two weeks, they were wealthy and had a huge house. My friend also had twin sisters. They were both very pretty but one was wild and the other was very conservative. I couldn't tell them apart so I had to be careful around them.
My friends father was a petite man with a fringe of short hair around his otherwise bald head. He was also very conservative. Every time he saw me he said, "See my beard, ain't it weird." He must have said that to me at least 20 times while I stayed there.
There are more stories about that stay but this is a thread about beards.
I had a shaggy growth of white hair on my chin but I shaved it off last week.

Regarding the non-conformity thing, the guys I see with facial hair are about the most normal, conformed types you could expect.

There’s no real way to rebel with appearances anymore. Everyone and their mother is covered with tattoos, piercings, etc. these days. I’m not opposed to any of it, but they’re not my personal style. And definitely not rebellious.

Your mother has piercings and tattoos? ;)
In the late 70's it was considered rebellious to have short punky hair. We used to laugh at the suburban kids who showed up to DK's shows with Mohawks. I have seen a lot of styles in my life, when I was a lad I had a flat top with fenders. (Not Fender guitars mind you :woot:).
My grandson has a mullet, not a 70's mullet but a 2020's mullet.
I say let each person be who they are and don't stress over appearances. I used to stress that I wasn't cool enough to fit in, now I don't care. Well, maybe a little but not very much.

That’s me in the middle @ a recent Nighthawks show in Atlanta. Except for one very brief period in the mid 2000s I’ve worn a close cropped full beard since 1990. I was trimming it around Labor Day of 2016 & my daughter (9 @ the time) said grow it out for Christmas. I’ve kept it trimmed but like this ever since.

It’s been a great ice breaker & conversation piece meeting new people to say the least. I’ll go back (or not) to my shorter crop one day but it’s really low maintenance. Kids love it. Who doesn’t love Santa?

I think a lot of men in the younger demographics are very concerned with fitting in. There has to be a reason why every dude in my office has a beard.
