Happy ending...
Ben just replied to me and I'll probably go for a JB 60's stack knob, burgundy mist reliced. Have to decide the "amount" of reliced but I've always been a great fan of Guy Pratt's bass (a 64 BM I believe) but current prices if original vintage are way above my budget (and a bit ridiculous since I'm neither a collector nor a pro player). I wish I could just hear some sounds samples of his JB and more pix of his vintage.

Let us know anyway once you got your bass

Another update, pics to come either Thursday or Friday. He's going to take about 15-20 detailed pics, so that should be nice eye candy. :smug:

We've had a lot of conversation about this bass; we talk a couple times a week. The bass ended up with my original specs of 70's spacing rather than the 60's we later talked about, so it's more like a mid-70's than a 66 Fender jazz (this was not due to my indecision as one might think; there's a lot of conversation going on in the background about ways to achieve a certain tone with varying aspects, like different pieces of wood, etc. Ben seems to be very "in tune" with the wood he uses). I feel really good about this as this will probably be my main slapping bass. When I need to lay down the Larry Graham-type funk lines, there's nothing like a 4-banger to make that happen.

The added bite from the 70's spacing will sound really good with my new rig, too, the Streamliner 900 with Berg HS210. It's so fat and thick and rich and clear, it should yin/yang with that upper mid/treble bite really nicely.

He put it on his bathroom scale sans pickup covers and it came in at 7 lbs even. Super light! And acoustically it rings loud and sustained. I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Finally, some pics!

She ships out tomorrow morning and should be here around Thursday just in time for Friday's gig. She looks pretty gorgeous if you ask me. :smug: I'll try and get some more pics of her when she comes in.

I love the dark rosewood with the dakota red. It's hot!

Did he do the Birds eye maple?

Bass looks great and exactly to your specifications, I am pretty sure that it will meet your expectations.

Pickup placement looks good. I am glad that your dream bass is finally completed. Cant wait for those clips and your opinion on those lollar's

Scott, that looks good! Seriously, Ben did good on taking the bass back and making those changes. If it wasn't for JohnK, I wouldn't have even noticed some of those flaws until six months later when I was playing it at a gig and somebody from the crowd pointed it out. I don't have an eye for details like that but I'm glad this was resolved the way it was.
Good on ya' and good on JohnK for hooking a fellow member up with some solid advice and finally good on Ben Lindsay for seeing the project through. Let's hope everybody's satisfied on Friday!

No birdseye on this neck, so not exactly to my specifications, but it does look pretty sweet none-the-less. I think the birdseye looked really good with the mary kaye white and antiqued tuners, but may not look as sexy with the dakota red. The regular light maple looks really nice with the red, IMO.

Hey guys, I don't have time to post much cause I gotta scram, but I wanted to put something here for the time being. I've only got about an hour of playing time on her so far.

First thing first, this bass is super light and balances perfectly! It's almost like it's not even there. Just incredible.

Second, it plays fantastically, just where I like it. Low action, but not too low so I can still dig, although it could take a much lower action easily enough.

The tone. It's one of the most responsive basses I've played. Very dynamic. It's big and full and deep but defined with a nice bright top end. Soloing the neck pickup gets an almost authentic P-bass sound. One of the best I've heard come out of a jazz pickup. The 70's placed bridge pickup does a great job of balancing that out.

Gotta run, gonna be late for my date tonight as it is. I'll keep you guys posted as I get some more experience with this bass.
