Best Live Band

  1. Robbie Merrill / Godsmack - I`ve seen `em in every venue from a 200 seat club, to massive arenas; 5 or 6 times total. And they tore the roof off every single time. Not my favorite band on record, but live...unbeatable.
  2. Newstead / Metallica - "Black" tour. `Nuff said.
  3. Clapton - various. Seen him several times, with various players. He - and his band - are always top-notch

Lot of great bands from the past. Currently hear Black Country Communion with Glen Hughes (formerly a Deep Purple bassist and vocalist and one record with B. Sabbath etc.) is doing great in Europe. Their new album, Black Country Communion 2 is rock solid. They sound a lot like Zepplin, as well as some Deep Purple sounds. Hughes sounds a lot like Paul Rogers of Free, Bad Company and Queen but gets a little carried away at times. Joe Bonamassa is... well he is the modern Clapton. I know some will disagree but the guy is great.

Anyway, if you get a chance to check out another band that you will always say was great to see live, I hear this is the one that is red hot now.

The best concert I ever saw was by the Doobie Brothers in Macon Georgia back when rednecks really were... Saw some great concerts but that show simply came together like none I ever saw before or since.

I'll give you some points for that. :) Plus it's always entertaining to see guys messing up their equipment. But I'm gonna up ya one with the nerve, which I hadn't even considered as it was my own band. If ya watch the whole 5 minutes of this you'll see we were actually fairly entertaining. And if ya can't handle the whole thing I think the more entertaining stuff is after 2:05...

Flawless performance and great tone.


3. Reverend Horton Heat - Jimbo

They opened for Motorhead at Stubb's in Austin, TX back in '09. Greatest show I've ever attended.

Back in the day and Although not my favourite for their music. Reef had more energy than chilis, foo fighters, silverchair, rage and the prodigy. They are old men now I guess so not sure what the show is like anymore. Chilis moved me musically but reef' rocked'

Here is my list:

1) Rush- Geddy Lee. The most consistently great live band I have seen. Really something to see if you have not.

2) Return to Forever - Stanley. I only saw them on the first reunion tour with Dimeola a few years ago, and it was incredible.

3) Dream Theater - John Myung

King Crimson / John Wetton (Larks Tongues tour)
Todd Rundgren's original Utopia / John Siegler
NRBQ (the Al Anderson years) / Joey Spampinato

Honorable mention to Paul McCartney's current touring band - saw them a couple weeks ago and they were outstanding.

Muse - Chris Wolstenholme, these guys put on some really spectacular shows live, great stage props and effects, and they ALWAYS sound great and have such a high energy.

Rush - Geddy Lee, don't know that I need to say much more... Haha, but they are so great live, even 40+ years later, and Geddy's bass play is phenomenal.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Mr. Victor Lemonte Wooten, my personal favorite and the band I would follow around the world if I had the money. I mean Wooten alone is enough reason, but their shows are soooooooooo amazing. Each musician is quite debatably the best in the world at their instrument and it shows. They play unbelievably together, and you're pretty much assured moments of humor, deeply musical and emotionally connected music, maybe a bass flip or two, and your jaw hitting the floor a few thousand times... Everyone, bass player or not should see these amazing musicians!

Others to note: the frames, the swell season, eagles, pearl jam, hall & oates, and a bunch more I'm sure I'm forgetting that deserve mention...
