Matt Freeman from Rancid (formerly of Op. Ivy) is a great bassist. I've seen the man live and its insane. He completly carries that entire band. I can honestly say that is one dude who supports the entire weight of a band.

Kibble, milkbones, and P Basses. And redheads.
Although he finally now is getting his due, I would have to say James Jamerson. The grooves on the Motown tunes are incredible. He was the reason the studio went to 8 track - so they could isolate his sound.

Do yourself a favor and get some older Genesis stuff. Mike Rutherford played some amazing stuff that just enhanced the songs.

Chris Wood - Medeski Martin and Wood - really creatively simple lines that stick to your mind like a freshly picked booger.
josh ansley - Streetlight Manifesto and early Catch 22 - without a doubt the best ska bassist ever, bar none. rediculously smooth and funky fretless lines that melt perfectly with their horn. even more amazing live than in studio.

Had he not been playing that Hoffner more people would have noticed. He should have played a P or Jazz.
Two bassists that I think are vastly underrated would be Mr. Paul Barker (ex-Ministry) and David J.(Bauhaus). Nothing too fancy, but always great.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this guy earlier (this is a long thread to read through), but Michael Been of The Call. Great lines, unique tone - and he wrote and sang most of the songs.
i can and can't believe nobody mentioned her.....but KIM DEAL is the queen bee of indie rock groove...rock groove period IMHO....she is a huge reason i finally started playing.....she keeps it simple clean and always locked in with david lovering the drummer......i could go on for hours but i have to go to work......KIM DEAL DAMNIT!!!!1
