Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

Hi Ken,

I hope you're doing well!

I play mainly with a 4-piece variety cover band - everything from oldies and classic country to hip hop, dance and pop. We're using JBL SRX 700 mains - two 718 subs and two 712M tops for most gigs and twice that for larger venues. I have a small MVW system for low volume restaurant-type gigs. Two GC25's and a GC 12" Rache sub, built by Leland.

I am doing well, thank you. :) Your current rig looks like a whole lot of fun! I haven't been playing out for some time now, I'm down to two rooms - the sanctuary and my living room. I haven't had the pleasure of playing through one of Mike's 6" based cabinets. Reading about them here lately almost makes me wish I had a need for a rig like yours or Nomatic's. I enjoyed playing through the 18sound 112 every time, but ended up selling it to fund another 110 Flex. In comparing the two designs, I concluded that I prefer the cross-firing mid drivers in their own chamber on the Flex. They are the same drivers that Roger Baer uses and sound so good to my ears. That's what boggles my mind when Tom B and Nomatic rave about the mid range presentation of the 66, how it can get 'better' than the Flex.

Since there are a few folks in here that are somewhat close. We are having a gtg this weekend in Austin. Sunday the 29th at the Oltorf Music Lab. 2pm to 8pm. I will have the 45/46/110s as well as a Hathor 1203 that Duke was kind enough to send us for the weekend. Lots of other cool toys will be around. No pressure, fun chill out time. Come see us if you can.
Wish I could be there -- I've got band practice (the 'Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, ~later~ Beatles' cover band ~~how many bands cover 'Strawberry Fields' & 'I Am the Walrus'~~ Coo-Coo-Ca-Choo?).

I'm hoping my MAS112 Essential LPT (LPT Essential???) isn't far behind. Mine will be about as stripped down as they come. 3012HO woofer and the cabinet. Don't know if it'll have the switchable 2kHz filter or not and don't know if it's basic black or chrome with a flame job (I'm cool with any color(s) Mike wants to throw on it or not). I'm just anxious to get it so I can bask in the vortexitude again.

FYI Big E MAS fans.....

I have my 210 Flex Mod up in the classifieds..
For Sale - MAS Soundworks 210 Flex Mod | TalkBass.com
Also I must share the current rig of doom pic (low quality)
The flex mod is the ultimate for many styles but the 66 plus sub is a little closer to my rarefied tone goals....

Nice rig. Can you or Mike explain if the 1x10 sub is tuned to go deeper than the tens in the flex or flex mod? I just play 4 strings with flats currently, so I am just curious. My little 4x6 goes deep enough for me.

The 110 sub is tuned exactly the same as the Flex's. They have a bit more kick, but the extension is about the same as the 6's. Nomatic was telling me that there's more "punch you in the chest" when adding the sub. I should clarify. The 110 sub--as it is on my site---is meant to be used with the MAS45. What Nomatic is talking about is the single ten bottom enclosure for the 210Flex. It's the same woofer and enclosure but a different crossover point. The crossover point is a lot higher than the 110 sub so there is a lot more contribution to the--- lower to mid---midrange.

Mntngrown.....
For louder gigs the Sub from the flex mod hits a little harder in the upper bass kinda like a wall coming at you.
I am sure I will miss the switches of the flex at certain venues but the 66 sounds closer to my studio tone...
I am driving this rig with a Jule Amps Monique 700 with Asterope cable and it is sick BTW!......

To answer the above I think Mike A can explain but in our discussions he mentioned the 66 I have is closer to a 8 ohm load in practice.
I also wanted to say that the MAS66 is just sick by itself without the 110 sub BTW... The sub brings this kind of impact to the party in a physical way but the 66 on its own sounds about the best I have heard. I was geeking with Arnopol and he mentioned the 10 inch driver would run out of steam before the 6s and it got me thinking..??
Mike why don't you put a 46 and a 110 in the same cab!!!??? (I know I have a problem....)

I think maybe you just have to be a special kind of crazy to be a bass player.

The best way to deal with a problem is head-on. In this case, that means acknowledging that what you really need under the 66 is a 112 on its side... (I'm half kidding.)
