Since I acquired two nice combos recently my MAS GAS has subsided to some extent. I do wish I could experience the 115 (or any other cab for that matter) in person. What I have now more than covers my needs and I doubt that I could get a single or dual fifteen cab up to the volume needed to engage the vortexitude but I still want one, if nothing more than because I could. Like using a .50 AE Desert Eagle as your CCW.If my experience with the 115 is any indicator, you definitely need some help.![]()
When running the 8 ohm flex mod sub with a 5.3 ohm MAS66 do you need an amp stable at 3 ohms? Maybe the Monique 700 is? Most of the Class D amps rated 4 ohm minimum impedance would seem to run hot at this loading.
To answer the above I think Mike A can explain but in our discussions he mentioned the 66 I have is closer to a 8 ohm load in practice.
I also wanted to say that the MAS66 is just sick by itself without the 110 sub BTW... The sub brings this kind of impact to the party in a physical way but the 66 on its own sounds about the best I have heard. I was geeking with Arnopol and he mentioned the 10 inch driver would run out of steam before the 6s and it got me thinking..??
Mike why don't you put a 46 and a 110 in the same cab!!!??? (I know I have a problem....)
This said (I've noticed this also and validate cabs I use with a multimeter) can you share any practical amp knowledge regarding 5StringPocket's question? How much variation is present in an amp by design, if any? Obviously this will vary amongst mfg's, models, etc; where's @agedhorse when you need him? Or maybe @JGR?Ok--I'm learning bit by bit as far as this speaker thang. Most drivers that are considered 8 ohms are actually lower. Like 5.24 to 6 ohms. I talked to Duke and Jerry at Eminence ----Duke had the same question for Jerry, because he was doing a 215 where the Re of each driver was 5.24. This driver was present in a few commercial 215 cabs. Or the same as two of the 12" drivers---which are present in a lot of cabs.In other words---if you parallel two 5.24 drivers you get 2.62 ohms. Most 212, 210, and 215 cabs are in this same boat.Jerry (who is the head designer) said that 1. he's never heard of an amp having trouble driving this because 2. The speaker never really goes that low in use.
So--the two driver choices for the 66 are the 5.24 ohm (8 ohm) driver or the 3.56 ohm (4 ohm driver). With the 8 ohm driver I series two drivers (10.48 ohms) and parallel the 3 pairs ---so----3.49 ohms. So, if I'm using the "8 ohm" drivers it actually yields a 4 ohm cab.
If I use the 4 ohm drivers I'm putting 3 drivers in series---10.68 ohms---and the putting each 3 driver series in parallel yielding 5.34 ohms---essentially an 8 ohm cab.
Nomantic's uses the 4 ohm drivers so it's actually an 8 ohm cab combined with the 8 ohm subwoofer. Interesting thing is that the 10 incher is 7 ohms---pretty high for a nominally 8 ohm driver. Jerry needed it that impedance to get the "Q" where he wanted it. So that woofer would probably be stable even with the 4 ohm cab. But the balance is probably best with the 8 ohm 66.

Your answer to my impedance question does make sense. You really dug into that one. Thanks. I know impedance varies with frequency, loading, and a few other factors so it is anything but fixed. Nominal impedance seems like a useful ballpark number when matching amps with cabs and combining loads but if you're not running hot or distorted and it sounds good you're probably alright. Yeah man---really got me thinking. The VD (volume of air moved) of the 110 sub is around 600cc's. The Vd of the 66 is around 900 cc's. So the 110 is going to be the limiting factor. The extra 300 cc's of the 66 are kindof lost because the 110 will fart out first. The MAS46 is around 600 cc's---about the same as the sub. So, combining a 46 and 110 sub should yield all of the benefits of the 66/110 combination. Total output of around 1200 cc's. More than a 410 or any 15, also. more than any 212.
This is a really cool thing about Talkbass. It likely wouldn't have crossed my radar to combine these two. As much as Nomatic digs it, I think I can mess around with the crossover to improve it a bit over what he's experiencing.
The cab would be 26 wide by 28 high by 14 1/2" deep. And around 60#. I'm building one next week. BTW---I'd use the 8 ohm drivers--series/parallel---yielding 5.24 ohms. Same as the 66.

I would recommend either a mic close to the transducer cone or at a distance greater than one meter from the front of the loudspeaker. I would not recommend a microphone near to Output Flare (port) as the multiturbulent hydrodynamic flow may cause unwanted artifacts as well as an absence of definition. This is because the energy has not yet reached equilibrium with the ambient environment.Hey Mike, out of curiosity, is there a particularly correct way to mic a MVW cab? We recorded the 115 last night and it sounded fantastic, but my singer and I were just curious if there is a preferred way. Also, would there be any phasing issues in the low end with how the vortex works when combining the recorded sound with a DI line?
