Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

I'm thinking about a second amp for back-up and change of flavor. Has anyone heard of anyone using an Orange Terror 1000 with the MAS cabs? I was thinking that maybe the fact that it can get rather nasty, it might be good for rock through an MAS112.

I am also considering a Sonic Farm, 2DI4, but I'm not sure I want to go the route of a DI and power amp, although I do like the tone I've heard in various clips.

Any thoughts?

Since you mentioned---maybe I'll send one. Actually, I was so enamored with the LPT that I'm working with Jerry (head designer for Eminence) on a brand new Kappalite woofer that has the qualities of the LPT but with longer excursion and 10hz lower extension. Mids should be the same and I may take a 2db hit in sensitivity. Still around 99db, though. I should have it in a cab by then.

OK I don't want to set the date, as I am semi retired and usually available. I will scout locations soon, but if anyone (over the hill) scouts a nice roomy one, it's only fair that a central to the greater bay area choice is picked this time. Input on locations after people scout availability soon?

Thanks for the reply, JW. Gonna take the regular 110 sub and a 46 to practice later today. Will be first time out in a band setting. Can't wait to see how the punch and clarity translates from my living room (which can't handle the sub too well) to rehearsal. I've already tried a 112/46 at rehearsal and that got hella loud and deep and was the first time I could actually hear myself in a practice recording. Hoping the 110/46 gets me to the same place with a bit less low end. :)

Jake, would you elaborate on your impressions of the 66+Flex sub vs. your Flex Mod? I have a 46 in the pipe and, having recently picked up a Flex Mod, plan on trying it with the sub portion. I have an embarrassment of riches, cab-wise, at the moment, with the aforementioned and my 112 with the 18 Sound driver. I'll eventually sort it out and downsize to some reasonable degree, but, for the moment, there are compelling arguments to be made for (and by) each cab. I've mentioned before that I find Monique a bit dark. Fretless Clement through the Monique into the Flex, though -- hokey smokes. That thing growls, sings, pops. Just fantastic. Doesn't seem dark, for whatever reason. Dig Monique more with that bass and cab than the Demmie 201. If that were my main thing, I think I'd have my rig. My fretted P/J... I prefer the 201, and think I prefer it through the 112. The Flex is finger-funkier, but the 112 just kicks, and its slightly thicker mids-voicing offsets the bit of scoop in the 201.

The 46... First MAS cab I had was a 2-way 66. Opened my eyes to what the cabs could do, but the voicing wasn't my thing. Hoping/thinking the latest 3-ways will be a lot closer. It'll be an easier (one-handable) schlep and (sad to say) should be enough for 90% of what I do. If I dig it with the sub, there's the other 10%. Still haven't explored the capabilities of the Flex, though. I'm surprised that I actually dig the Dark mode on that -- really does give the cab/amp a bit of a tubey feel. Dark Mode with the tweeter engaged is my second favorite voicing so far. Fave is the default but, like I said, lots of exploring yet to do.

Hey Dee, How did the 46 and sub go at rehearsal? Mark, it is cool that a player as analytical and articulate as you has in your hands so many of the cabs, so you can offer your breakdown on your real world gigging experience. I personally think it's not sad at all that the 46 covers most of what you do. At this point in my simple pocket player blues/rock experience the 46 is the dream cab, and I would simply add a 2nd one as needed. But my 48 is still the hands down outdoor and big club "own the space" master so far. Caveat: I have no clue when it comes to sophisticated EQ choices etc. My owning a 2x10 flex is a work in progress, and most probably a "pearls before swine" thing. I think my next big gig I will put the super bassman on top of it and see if I can bond with it.

I am hard pressed to comment on the 66/110 vs flex 210mod since I only heard the former briefly in nomatics basement, and not with my own bass. It did sound a little more immediate and broader in the mids, which is not to say the 110 top is lacking in midrange in any real way. Perhaps nomatic can make a better comparison.
