Biking '10 part 2

Yeah, here it's 20$/yr for the trail network I posted up there, I'm doing that Thursday at the shop when my platforms gets there. The shop also gave me a "vip" card which is 20% off everything for one year, not to bad.

Btw, I went on 2 rides so far with the MTB, I definitely need to grow some bigger balls, I'm a wussy.

If you think falling off of your road bike is fun, just wait 'til you pack it in on a trail...now that's crashing...

IMO road crashes are usually WAY more damaging- hard ground/pavement, typically a good-sized gaggle of other riders to get tangled with on the way down, often higher speeds... I've dumped it on my MTB often enough that I'm- dare I say it- pretty [DEL]good[/DEL] well-practiced at it & have yet to seriously injure myself(aside from a patially-torn ACL over 10 years ago; very much a self-induced fluke thing).
Crash story derail/tangent?

And usually in front of a large group of people.

This.

I've crashed because of my pedals once. Rather just tipped over in a big mud pile. I just leaned over enough to the right to keep my balance and when I overcompensated to the left with the bike, my leg was at an impossible angle to unclip.

My bad crash was crossing a small creek. Went through it and was not in the right gear to climb out of it. Fell backwards. Busted elbow. Broken saddle. Had about 7mi of single track to ride without a saddle until I made it to the street where my buddy rescued me.

in fact , here is said creek and rescuing friend:

Clipless pedals make you crash once, usually at a ridiculously low speed.
That right there!

-------------------

Crash story (sorta), off-road style...Sunday afternoon ride, and I'm with the guys from Santa Cruz and on one of their demo SL frames...I try to sorta-lateral-bunnyhop a rain rut (something I've done all the time on my own hardtail) doing maybe 12 mph and on a gentle little downhill; the bike comes down and all hell breaks loose...tailwhipping like mad, sliding sideways, then more whipping and about now my left cleat rips out of my Sidi, then the front wheel hits a rock and pitches me and the bike into a nose-wheelie (all this is what everyone else said they saw...I don't remember much, as I was a little busy trying to keep myself upright). I ride it out somehow (I have NO idea how...I was just a passenger by then and I think I know how pro bullriders must feel in those eight seconds) and finally get it under control enough to stop the bike. The sales mgr from SC then says "Oh yeah...that's the frame we're supposed to put a new (rear) shock on...thanks for reminding me!"

20-odd years ago, at Sand Hill Ranch. I'm a 20-odd year old midle-of-the pack sport-class rider w/a decent sprint & pretty ripping BMX skills, leading the pack on a sexy new polished aluminum Klein w/a Tange Switchblade fork(the most GAWDAWFUL rigid F/F combination imagineable- upon hitting any kind of bump it was a complete crapshoot as to which way you would bounce). As I hit the downhill on the first of 3 laps, I knew I'd very likely get passed as the bike just didn't descend well. In fact I could hear a guy coming up behind me, so I moved over to the far right/outside of a very wide, flattish left hand sweeper & prepared to relinquish my short-live lead. As this BASTARD came by on the inside, he clipped my handlebars w/his & spat my skinny ace to the ground HARD. I was SO PO'ed- I gave the guy the whole damned road(it was a good two car-width dirt road)& he needed to pass so close that he crashed me. I rolled to a stop, bounced back up & took stock: nasty, dirt & rock-encrusted rash on both shins, both knees, scrawny chest, back & a nice fat lip. Effen a-hole- I knew I wasn't going to finish all that great & was making every effort to let the jerk by.
I have pics somewhere- I'll try & scan them in & post. I was a mess; I finished but looked like Rocky Balboa as played by Olive Oyl
