Just got email from Jamie (the other half of the Birdsong duo) and said it should be here on or before a week from today. That is my last day of Teacher work day stuff, so I am having them ship it to me here at the school so I won't miss it...

After short deliberation, I have taken the plunge. The downpayment was made this morning.
I will be DeanT's twin with the other Summer Special from Inventory - I'm guessing I'll be 8C-062.
Just want to back up everything other people have said. I spoke to Scott last night and he seems a really genuine, great bloke. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a bass, I'd far rather give it to someone I genuinely like than some big corporation.
Now the wait begins...

Congrats - I saw the Summertime Specials in the shop when I was there last year and the pictures don't do them justice. I had NO interest seeing them in pics on the site but in person - WOW...cool stuff. Excellent call.

These bodies look great in the photos. If they are even better in real life, then I'd say we lucked out big time. I can't wait for it to be done. Mine's in final sanding now, so it shouldn't be long. Though I am having some special woodburning done by Scott, so I don't know if that will delay things too much or not.
By the way Professor, are you going to do the single pickup, rear routing like Scott suggests on the inventory page or do you have something else in mind?

... I kid, of course, but I cannot wait tol 8C-117 gets here, scheduled to be delivered Friday to me at my school (my last day!!)At 4:00 this morning, it arrived in Ft. Worth, Texas... Ain't FedEx tracking GREAT?!?!?!
Scott and Jamie are very genuine. They are the real thing. They truly walk their talk and I admire them for that.

I've gone for the two pickup config. Having listened to the samples on Millard's site, that was the easiest decision to make. Black hardware as Scott suggested.
I was pretty torn on the whole rear-routing issue. On the one hand, I wanted to do it for the wood; but on the other I like the shape of the control plate - it's very Birdsong and is kind of their "stamp", if you know what I mean. Cost was also an issue so I plumped for the black control plate.
What I'm most interested in is how the wood will turn out. Scott said it's normally done clear so as not to affect the colour of the maple. It was at this point that his brain started turning over ideas: "clear, then light blackwash on the wings, then clear might work", "or clear then light blackwash, then ultramaroon, then clear". So who knows? I told Scott that I trust his judgement and gave him free reign to experiment.

1.) Two pickup config - good call. I love one pickup basses and wanted to stick to them, but I have fallen in love with the Lace Sensor neck pickup so much that I'd rather give up the bridge pickup.
2.) trusting Scott's judgment - another excellent decision. Left to his own devices, he's done some mighty cool stuff.

Well, I could leave you all in suspense....
But first, did you get the demo CD from Birdsong? if that doesn't sell you on their basses, nothing will. I'm thinking of possibly getting a Hy5 because of it -- and I don't generally play 5 string!
Anyway, to your question. I was planning on having fretboard inlays done on the 7th and 12th frets of my daughters names. But Jamie said since they don't do that in house, it would be very, very expensive. She suggested that Scott use his woodburning skills instead.
So, I decided to have Scott burn my daughters names into the back of the neck. I'm letting him use his judgement on where and what it will look like. I don't think he's started it yet because I haven't seen any photos.
Also, and this blew me away, I asked Jamie if I had the woodburning done, would that void the 7 day return policy. I figured if I had the bass personalized and I wasn't happy with it, I couldn't send it back because they wouldn't be able to sell it to someone else with some stranger's kids names on it. But she said that would be no problem and that they could work their magic and take the names off if necessary to resell it. Of course, I am not going to hate it and they are not getting the bass back (at least while I'm alive anyway).

The woodburning sounds like a really nice touch, very personal. Amazing that the guarantee still stands with personalisation like that. The more I hear about them (and the more I read the more random pages on the site), the nicer those guys seem to be.

8C-117 IS here... And MAN is it beautiful. the pics do it NO justice. Arrived yesterday. I have only had a few minutes to play it, as yesterday being the last day of my teacher inservice and me me getting my kids and trying to clean my place cause my parents are coming Wednesday (and I gotta get a buncha teeth cut outta my head Monday) I crashed unwillingly when I got home last night. I plan on playing it tonight. A lot. Scott leaves the thumbrest in the case so you can put it where you want it when you get it. I am trying to decide if I want to put it on myself or take it to the luthier... What do y'all think?

I would think the thumbrest wouldn't be hard to put on yourself -- just a few screws. My biggest problem would be positioning it so it's actually comfortable to use.
