Minor update.
The "Noel" guitarist who subbed for us at the gig brought great tone and stage presence, but we all agree he's not the one, so we're auditioning another today.

Wish us luck. We need someone who can nail the iconic riffs reliably. I really hope he works out as our next show is in 2 weeks!

Another Minor Update.
The Auditioned Guitarist was great. Had notation ready for alot of the iconic riffs and he nailed them.

We had asked him to be ready with half the set. He was, and had the other half reasonably well done, We'll do the other half this Saturday. Likely we'll ask him to stay on and I hope he thinks highly enough of us to do so.

Update:
I've decided to let you all in on the drama with the first replacement guitarist. I didn't share with you all earlier why we're not going with him. His guitar tone and stage presence were indeed quite good, but he nailed almost none of the iconic Noel riffs or solos and he seemed under the influence of one or more substances from the moment of his arrival through the end of the evening. As if that weren't enough, he walked off stage one song before the end of our set. So, we played our last song and a one-song-encore while he sat at the bar. All this and he seemed bewildered as to why he we weren't moving forward with him, repeatedly reaching out and asking "when's the next gig?" and insisting that "we dont' have to play it just like the record".

In a stark contrast, this Saturday the second rehearsal with the replacement replacement guitarist went well. He nailed most parts. There were a couple where we would prefer he played a different one of the various overdubbed guitar parts. He adapted/learned those on the fly well. Two of the songs need a bit more work on his part, but we all left feeling very confident. Drummer couldn't attend the rehearsal so we'll probably wait until after the gig to officially invite this guy to join, but I'm pretty stoked and hopeful. I'm a big fan of musicians who are chill, good-natured and talented and so far he seems to be all those. Also, he was not put off when we were very up front with him that this gig does not yet have the income potential of his last project.

Will report after the gig, but I'm feeling good.

So he walked off stage before your set was over and then wanted to know "when's the next gig"?

Pure academic question since you're moving ahead with the new guy: Did he not understand his audition extended to how he did on the first gig and possibly beyond? Did he not get that during the initial stages, he'd be seen as someone who needs to earn his way in?

Sure, you or I would probably understand this, but some people have an impressive lack of awareness - both self and situational - as evidenced by the inappropriateness of his insisting "we don't need to play it just like the record" in a band he's auditioning for, especially where the opposite is part of the original mission.

Yeah, and substances/drugs (or alcohol)? They don't usually help crawl out of that impressive lack of awareness.

I have no idea what the answer.is regarding his location on the axis of self delusion vs lack of awareness.

I do know that sometimes both/either can be packaged in such confidence that it takes a beat before you realize that it isn't our problem to solve .

And sometimes it takes a beat to realize what seems like confidence is merely fear and ego.

But your right - "not my rodeo, not my clowns" - not your problem to solve - is a great way to see things in terms of what you can control vs what you can't. My what-I-can't-control list could fill a library.

Sounds like you set and enforced a healthy boundary moving on from this guy - good luck with the new guitar player and be sure to let us know how things progress - sounds like everyone's on the same page.

UPDATE.
Second Gig went very well. New guitarist is the business and a very nice guy. We offered him the lead guitar chair after the gig and he accepted.

We've got a lineup! Now we just need to bulk out the set and get some good gigs.

We're messing with the roles a bit. Because he sings harmonies, we'll be making our Rhythm player our "Noel" and giving him downstage in small venues. Our lead player will be "Bonehead" and will be upstage if necessary.

Also, I'm no longer Guigsy, but rather Andy Bell. Better fashion, sunglasses, and my black P-bass (just added a black pickguard) is a reasonable stand in for his current stage instrument.

Things keep rolling along. Gigs are now booked for March 20th with a Cranberries Tribute in the city and May 1st with a GooGoo Dolls Tribute in the burbs. We're still playing for the door, but on much better terms than the last gig.

At this point, that would be the Rhythm Guitarist then as he booked the last gig and our two upcoming gigs. I'd actually be fine with that as he's a good guy and has the gig connections, but he wants to keep it democratic.

Same happened to me. The BL/drummer accused me of lack of compromise (BS), he went ballistic a day I had a flat tire with no spare on my way to rehearsal (I sent a pic, knowing there would be problems) and he fired me/I quit in a shouting contest the next day. Everybody left the band and we reformed without him. We kept the name, he the band money (500€). And he accused me of stealing some mic stands (BS).

Our main consideration is that the guitarist who is singing harmonies and who has the most stage presence should be at the front but it's good to know that there's some precedence for mixing around of the parts.

Sounds like a great outcome! Quite a vote of confidence for you by the rest of the band.

Interstingly, The BL posted an ad trying to restart the project (using the original name) a week or so ago, but it was taken down a day later.

Update:
Gig 3 was Monday April 20th with a Cranberries Tribute. Both bands played quite well and some of the same Chicago Oasis fans attended again. Overall though very low attendance at a venue not really setup for live music (nice equipment, but a tiny "stage" and NO stage lighting at all). Might be able to squeeze a good video out of a fan's iPhone, but the video camera I setup has us all barely visible in deep shadows.

Onward though, our next Gig is in a month on May 1st. We're making our first first foray into the 'burbs and playing with a Goo Goo Dolls tribute.

The Adventure continues.
The band is doing well, but we keep having somewhat more complications than normal.

At the Bartlett gig our RhythmGtr/BGV couldn't make it. However he was able to line up an excellent sub and now we've got a great guitarist in the rolodex in case we need a sub in the future.

Just to add to the excitement, the second bassist had his rig for backline and I overheated it into shutdown in the middle our last song. Luckily it cooled down in time for their set.

Moving ahead to today....

Now we have a gig tonight and of course things couldn't just go smoothly. Last night the singer reported he was sick and has lost his voice!!

So, my wife will be stepping in. She's got a great voice and is a lifetime Oasis fan, but it's still going to be an exciting time going in with no rehearsal.

In the wider view, I'm glad to be in a group with a "the show must go on" mentality. I personally think that a good tribute or cover group with ProAm players should always be ready to grab a sub and soldier on.

Sounds counterintuitive, but “the show must go on” mentality can actually take some of the bite out of gig stress. It’s basically saying, “may not be ideal, but we’ll get through the set one way or another.”

Might turn into a great night. Might teach you a few lessons. Odds are, probably both. Let us know how it goes.
