Boss GT-10B

I added some clips of the factory effects presets for Chorus, Phase, and Flange. Check my page. The amp sim I use is fairly dark so I'm sure the lack of high end affects the overall sound of the effects, so keep that in mind. I probably should've just run the effects on the dry bass so you get a more dramatic effect, but that's not particularly real world.

I'm not a huge compressor user. There is actually some mild comp in my amp preset patch. I tried recently to find a way to leverage comp at the END of my chain to get some super duper pumping compressor sounds but was unable to. Putting a pump after thick reverb makes for some really awesome swell effects. You play, stop playing, the pumping compressor swells the reverb up to seriously audible levels almost like a second instrument. I can do it in software, can't seem to reproduce with the GT-10B comps.

With all that said, I can easily run my dry recording back through the GT-10B patches, effects, etc. I'll try to do some more for comps, amp sims, drive effects, etc. While it's easy, it is a bit time consuming.

Baby steps. :)

Understood. I really appreciate you doing this. Until I can get my hands on a unit to try, this helps quite a bit to hear a high-quality demo. Most you-tube demo recordings are horrid in terms of sound quality.

By the way, the phaser and delays sound great. I like the way you took a reference recording and cycled it through the different patches. Great approach.
 
Most of the drive effects are usable but they're not super duper awesome, they're still buzzy instead of thick and lush. I personally prefer Line6 drive effects generally speaking, though Line6 provides no clean blend or the nice "bottom" blend BOSS provides. But pair the BOSS drive effects with an amp sim and EQ and it can really shape it well.

How do you use yours? In manual mode, like a regular pedalboard or you just use the patches with the controls changing parameters?
 
When I played bass for the local original rock band Mumu Tutu Link Removed I didn't use any of the drive effects. Just chorus, touch wah, and synth. Drive effects came from my MESA Titan head's tube overdrive.

In my current electronica project, startup phase so nothing to share yet, I'm trying hard to use only my GR-55, simply so I have a single box to lug. But I may end up leveraging the GT-10B in there somehow at which point the plan would be to use no physical amps at all and then I'd use the drive and amp sims in the GT-10B and run direct to PA.

If you check out some of the patches I shared on my page I do use the drive effects for synths, and to provide some gain and grit in front of my Ampeg amp sim as opposed to cranking the drive on the Ampeg.

I'd see no issue using the drive effects and running them into an physical amp. But I would personally stick an amp sim and/or EQ block after it to help shape it. Specifically I always find the high end a little fizzy/buzzy, and sometimes the decay on low notes get buzzy (more ripped speaker sounding buzz) in an unnatural way in my opinion.

Honestly, once in a mix nobody would be able to tell, and certainly not in a live environment. When you can tell is when you directly A-B some excellent hardware drive pedal to the GT-10B side-by-side.

After typing all of that, note that the Noise Suppressor in the GT-10B can absolutely cause buzzy decay in your sound if you set the threshold too high. What will happen is when the notes decay towards reaching the gate threshold the noise suppressor starts to mangle the sound slightly. You usually have to listen hard to the note decay to notice it. On the flip side, if you sandwich your drive effects with two noise gates both with unnaturally high threshold and a 0 release you can start getting pretty close to that tight gated drive sound.
 
My choice is the GT-10B because it is extremely configurable with Assigns, these are internal controllers which can be programmed to a footswitch or an Expression pedal or input level or internal oscillator, and control any of the 700 adjustable parameters per each patch.
The GT-10B has 8 assigns to use at once, so you can create some very complex sound scapes.
The effects can be place in any order and all 18 effect blocks can be used at the same time. The Gt-10B also has a dual/parallel effect chain, like 2 processors in one.
The amp sims are very excellent, you might not want to use you sans amp, and it also has 2 internal synths.
The Gt-10B allows you to connect your SVT in four cable method, this is where the Send/Return internal effect block becomes your SVT preamp, and is movable around the effect chain, and the SVT power amp is used separately.
The GT-10B has 200 editable user patch locations plus another 200 factory patches, and a large easy to read display, and the chassis is solid and durable, plus being Boss/Roland it will last for years.
