Bourbon...

The Pappy Van Winkel lottery is on again in PA.
I signed up for just about everything we could afford.
They start at the top and work their way down through the packages in decreasing order of value (one package was about $2k - passed on that one, and a couple of others).
You can win at most one.
Last year, we snagged a 10 year and managed to ration it into October.
Winners announced by December 10.

One of our local stores has a drawing too. I bought an 11year Four Roses that got my name in the hat. Fingers crossed!

This pass weekend I finally got to taste the Mid Winters Dram. It was ok.

can get that all day long around here but, 50+ for a bottle that smallish bottle that says Jack on it ? I don't know about that.

Back when it was cheaper, about 8-9 years, it was a go-to of mine.
Certainly different than the Jack you're use to.

I've been leaning more torwards Rye whiskeys recently, but the Single Barrel KC is outstanding, IMO.

Follow up on the Colorado offerings I received. The Deerhammer is a bit hot for me, but it's got a nice flavor.
The whiskey was better than I expected for how young it is.

THIS is my current fave

To my palate, there's three defining characteristics, with subtle layers in between, revealing themselves in time.
1. The expected sweetness of the Corn based sour mash.
2. The inherent "heat" of the higher proof.
3. The warm oaky/woody notes from the barrel aging.

my palate isn't that sophisticated yet, at least not with Bourbons. I'm still learning. Tequilas on the other hand, I've become very sensitive to what makes one good or bad to me.

Believe me, I'm not that sophisticated either.
I've just had a number of bourbons throughout the years, and even though I'm not the most adept at picking up on the subtleties,
there are some flavors I pick up on after a few drinks.

A good way to start learning is try a wheated bourbon next to a regular bourbon. This differences are easy to pick out.

Wow, in NY that wouldn't last a second and would be double the price...well maybe not double. The bourbon scene is one of the more whacky...I totally skipped on the fall hunt this year, but a buddy of mine slept in his car to get a pappy bottle from a store that only mildly rips you off.

I stopped in at the Columbus Circle liquor store in Manhattan last May to see what they had for bourbon. Specifically Elmer T. Lee, a favorite of mine.
I knew prices would be higher than normal at that location, but it blew me away to see a price tag of $375 on one bottle. I asked the guy if that price was for the case. That made him mad enough to ask me to leave if I wasn't buying anything.
When we visit NH, I run down to a liquor store in Mass where I can get Elmer for $40 a bottle.

In Georgia the stores wouldn’t even put it out. They would hide it in the back and you would be lucky if they sold you one. Only one. The good thing is I haven’t seen anybody asking more than retail prices though.

Funny thing is, if you go to the liquor stores that are owned by Asians they typically will have it on the shelves and will let you buy as many as you want. I love it! They don’t play those bourbon games.
