Hey Tom, Hey Donovan
I have a MJX5 and understand the Brute SC-5 will have a similar pickup config but the body will be made from ash. How would you decsribe the differeces in sound between the two? I really want one, but I'd like to get one when they come out with the maple board as I'm partial to maple boards.

I suggest you play the NAMM videos on YouTube over a high quality speaker. All of those vids are with a Hartke LH500 set flat and the basses for the most part either set flat or both treble and bass all the way boosted. I think you can hear it.

To me they are very Brute, but just a touch "softer", but you can really hear some nice natural mid.

I'll let others who have played the Single Cuts here give you their opinion.

I just put the finishing touches on my Brute JJX5:

Custom pickguard from Kevin
Dunlop recessed straplocks
Black pearl diamond inlay at 12th fret
Sadowsky style black aluminum knobs

Sorry about the bad phone pics took them just before I left for work this AM, will post better ones ASAP

I always love Roger's knobs. Nice job!

Well I know I have been a big advocate of the stock brute pickups , but as of late my band has started using IEM systems and the 60 cycle hum of the pickups on my JJX5 has finally pushed me to the point of swapping them out. So today I took advantage of a coupon for GC and have a set of bartolini 59j1 L S pickups on their way . I still love the stock pickups but using IEM all the time was hard. I am also going to be changing up my MJX5 the audere classic 4 band pre is coming out and will be for sale and I think I am going with a bartolini 2 band pre with dual volumes in favor of a blend pot .I have also been debating on a refinish on my red one , I was leaning towards satin black but found a really nice satin burgundy that I think will look sick with the burst pickgaurd I have .these bass's are a killer mod platform and the playability is unreal. I am still waiting for the release of the SC5 .

I know. The SC's won't be available until June. I just got invoiced for a Brubaker KXB-5 so I am fully occupied with my build :-)

:hyper:MJX5 ordered!!! and on its way. Thanks Donavan. I'll be swapping the chrome hardware out for black as soon as it touches ground. Hipshot ultralites are a direct replacement I am told but if anyone has info on a direct bridge replacement let me know.

Ultralites should drop right in. I went with Gotoh's mainly because of the price, and they went right on without issue.

Carvin uses the same bridge on some of their basses, this black one is a direct replacement:

However, I went with a Hipshot B Style. Not a direct replacment, but the sound quality difference was well worth drilling a few new holes.

Anybody doing a vol/vol setup on their MJX? I've tried several blend knobs and it seems that once you get past a certain point (a little beyond the center - towards the bridge)the j-pup completely cuts out. There really is no blend.

I was thinking about switching to a vol/vol setup and was wondering who's using that setup and what are your thoughts about it?

I believe that was one of the shortcomings of the stock preamp, the blend is not a blend.

My suggestion? New preamp. That way you can do a blend.
