Can we please stop using "guitard"?

Side note: I am proud to say that a local tribe from my home town in California were asked to weigh in if a local high school should change their name from redskins to something else and they said no, they are not offended by that title and that the school carries the name with pride and honor.

I'm surprised they didn't reach out to other tribes until they got the response the liberals were looking for.

There's still a lot of point-missing going on here. Of course it is not particularly hurtful to your guitarist when you call her or him a guitard. We all know it's a joke. Now let's say your son plays guitar. He's in on the joke and you call him a guitard sometimes and you both laugh. Now one day you're at the studio waiting for his guitar teacher. A woman has her daughter there. The daughter has Down's Syndrome.

Since there is NOTHING WRONG with using the word guitard, you say to your son "have a great lesson guitard". Then just to make sure you're not misunderstood you turn to the girl and say "that's a compound word made from guitar and r*tard but it's harmless".

there's a differnce between a guitard and a guitarist: a guitarist is someone who actually knows how to play guitar and isn't an ******* about it, while a guitard is 1 of 2 things someone who thinks they are a guitar god but really don't know jack crap, or a guitar player with an ego wayyyyyy bigger than the actual talent.

You really believe this?

If you can't express yourself and be different without using offensive terminology, then you probably should be talk until you read a book or two.

I whole heartedly disagree on this one. Taking offensive language out is like removing minor chords from music because they don't sound pretty. It's like removing all the villains from movies and only having good guys. Offensive words have impact. Most of my favorite artists are outsiders who make lowbrow art. They proudly use offensive language and imagery as a badge of honor waving in the face of conformity.

Well, I'm going to go ahead and bail out here. For all the debate, I'll best most guys on here, if they were on a gig break, and a 10-year old kid with Down Syndrome came up because he thought bass was the coolest thing ever, most of us would take the time to show him the rig and let him thump a note or two. Because at the end of the day, we hold it down and get it done. Take care.

Seriously guys...

verb: r e t a r d; 3rd person present: retards; past tense: ********; past participle: ********; gerund or present participle: retarding

R e t a r d - (riˈtärd)
to delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment.

When a person refers to a guitarist that is so fully up there own ass as to r e t a r d the music process, said guitarist is commonly referred to as a guitard.

R e t a r d is an actual word with an actual definition, and guitard is a slang word derived from r e t a r d.

I've met guitarists that muck up the music process with their immaturity, arrogance and self serving nature.

They... are.... guitards.

I'm actually a little offended that the software on this site doesn't allow me to spell dufus without spacing... I wonder how the definition of dufus is offensive...

if you can truly laugh at yourself ... then nothing should ever offend you ...!

i am in charge , 100%, of how i react to whatever enters my brain ..!

if you must speak in an offensive manner , then absolutely nothing should be safe or 'off the table' ...
like Don Rickles ... equally offend everyone ..!
One of the reasons I love South Park. They take shots at everybody.

OK, folks, answer honestly:

You're at a gig. There is a person with Down Syndrome at the gig, with his friends and family. Your guitarist screws up a song. Would you say, "Jesus, Joe, you are such guitard!" in earshot of the kid with Down Syndrome or his family? If not, why not?
Because my guitarist is not a guitard. Also I refuse to use that word. But if I was pointing someone out of a crowd and that person happened to be standing by a ******** person, I would say that's him or her next to the ******** person unless someone else next to him or her had something more obvious going on. Thus making it more easy to identify.

******** is real and happens in the millions every year.

While this is a completely true and valid point; the overuse of such shocking language diminishes the impact as others get desensitized to it.

I rarely use swear words, but when I do, most everyone takes notice because they don't expect that from me. Other people I know swear a blue streak all the time and no one notices what they actually say.

So I do think its smarter to learn to express yourself without using them.

Point completely missed.

We all know the definition of Mexican. It's a person from Mexico. Nothing wrong with that. Now if someone is being lazy and we say "stop acting like a Mexican" are you going to defend that by copying and pasting the dictionary definition of Mexican?
