This thing made me google the word....and there's a lot to be found.A multitude of T-shirts,albums titled, songs, etc.

No one seems to embrace the word more than guitar players themselves.

Leslie West of Mountain fame...There's also one by the band Limp, using the same wheelchair logo.

So...... anyone think this thread will still be open tomorrow? There will probably be a "rule" or amendment offering the same protection to special needs guitarists as soundmen. Yay

TOTAL BS!!! When we say "guitard" we are not meaning "********" by some general definition of slowing down like an internal combustion engine's spark advance. The r*tard part of "guitard" specifically references a developmentally or intellectually disabled person.

Oh, then in reference to a guitarist that lacks the ability to work with others and is in fact ******** with respect to their ability to do so... then yes, I guess I'm still correct in my attempt at definition.

Thanks for clarifying.

Okay. We're clearly different. I've never liked controversial art solely because it is controversial. I always felt that the artist needed that edge to stand out because their art wasn't good enough to do it on its own. It seems you feel differently.

Regardless, my point was that an author doesn't need to use offensive terminology in their writing to tell their story, unless of course they need to in order to portray a character as a bigot, or whatever.

I'm all for villains in movies, otherwise there'd be no story...

I'm just stating that you can still keep your individuality without using offensive terminology.

To each their own. I don't think authors need to be offensive, but I think the choose to be offensive. Just like musicians don't need to play loud, they just like playing loud. And I defend their right to do so.

An artist like Robert Williams (the guy who painted the banned Appetite for Destruction album cover for GnR) is undeniably an expert craftsman. But he grew up in the 50s driving hotrods and getting in switchblade fights with latino greaser gangs. He chose to elevate that lifestyle the same way gansta rap did 30 years later. The same can be said for the way Hunter Thompson and Doug Stanhope glorify drug use and debauchery. I'm a fan of art that pushes the boundaries of what's acceptable behavior. I also get a kick out of seeing other people get offended. I love those old Bill Hicks videos where people get offended and walk out. It makes me laugh.

What I find offensive is someone trying to modify my behavior by telling me what I can or cannot say, enough of the pc crap. You are implying that it's used to specifically degrade those who are disabled. A little insensitive to them, sure, while we're at it lets ban the use of the word stupid as it's degrading to anyone with low intelligence. And I find your use of the term douche bag offensive to women as it refers to a necessary hygienic practice.

Amen. The "R" word, which I'm evidently not even allowed to type here, has been compared with the dreaded "N" word in offensiveness. I find this to be ridiculous. Some 18 wheel trucks use a device called a brake retarder, why is that not considered offensive? Why isn't midget car racing banned? Unless this word is being directed as an insult toward a person of diminished mental capacity it is simply an adjective. Everyone is offended by something. Guess what, you don't have the right not to be offended. I mean, some people are saying that merely mentioning the word bacon offends Muslims. How far are we willing to let this nonsense go? Eventually the PC police will find something about YOU that someone finds offensive. Orwell was right, he just got the date wrong.

This PC crap continues for much longer we won't be able to refer to people as men, women, boys and girls... Oh and Target will lead the way

"Parents have complained that labels may even be harmful..." - These parents have WAY too much time on their hands and must have a perfect life to make this an actual concern to worry about. PC gone wild.

First of all, if you refer to a person of "diminished mental capacity" as "********". It's NOT an insult. They ARE. Again, it's not an accepted term anymore, but that's a different subject. It's when you call someone that's NOT disabled "********" that is hurtful. You are saying "you and/or your behavior is as undesirable as an intellectually disabled person".

I wonder if r e t a r d is derived from the Italian word ritard or ritardando which means to slow or decrease the tempo?

Hmmmmm...

I always thought it was funny that on TB you can't be critical of sound engineers, but, using a derogatory nickname for guitarist is perfectly acceptable.

That being said, I could not care less about what a bunch of faceless people on the Internet say about anything, especially, music related.

The word dufus literally means, to slow. Would anyone be actually be offended if they went to the hardware store and saw a gallon of lacquer retarder?

Great. You have your own definition that is what you mean when you say "********".

I told my friend his wife was a bitch. But it was cool because he knows that it means "female dog" and he likes dogs.
