So if I'm walking down a city street and hear someone berate a person of color with vile, racists remarks my natural reaction should be to approach the person of color and explain to them all of the ways that THEY shouldn't have a problem with it and how the onus is on THEM to move on and ignore that filth?? No. That's not what I implied exactly. I said you teach people. Thats a long process that hopefully begins in childhood and over time upon reflection of various life events instills a sense of immunity from it.

You cant just try to intervene in one instance and hope to convey the revelation to them that they can't be hurt if they chose not to be.

Besides, human nature being what it is, trying to convince a person that they are wrong to do something only reinforces their desire to do it more.
