Can we please stop using "guitard"?

Well if this thread proves anything, it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that anti-PC people are completely phony. They think it's your problem if you get offended over something they say, but turn the tables on them and insult them and they get offended, too. You're just as susceptible to being offended as anyone else...you just have different triggers. And I can assure you that if you offend me, I will find your trigger and use it against you just because I think you're a phony. So knock off the phoniness, own up to it, and if you don't want me to offend you, don't offend me.

I guess it should stop. I'd have to search my posts to see if I've used it, I may have. I guess I'm a little less sensitive to ****** because at some point in jr high my nickname was Ricardo Retardo. So, I think my brain just shut off any sensitivity to that word. But I agree, I'll stop. Then there's douche. Isn't that offensive to women? We're saying something is wrong with the female reproductive organs such that we make it an insult. Just food for thought.

Alright, since this thread has gotten to this point… ;)

So: most of us are in a position of advantage for reasons we had nothing to do with, and these unearned advantages come at other people's expense. So, I'm a man. That's an advantage over women, intersex, transgender folks, and so on. I'm straight, and that's a big advantage over lesbian, gay, bi, questioning, and asexual people. My parents were middle-class, and that's an advantage over the poor. I'm close to neurotypical, so I have advantages over people with personality disorders and mental disabilities. I'm a US citizen, and that's an advantage over immigrants in the US (or even natives living in some of other countries I might visit).

It's rude to all of the people I have advantages over to make fun of them or make jokes at their expense. So, I really shouldn't use "gay," "fag," "dyke" as insults. I shouldn't use call people "bums" or call neighborhoods "ghettos" because they're not as clean as the rich neighborhoods. I shouldn't call people "********" because they don't talk or think the same way I do. You get the point. Why? My intuition is that our jokes can actually hurt the disadvantaged. A person can actually get pushed out of a community, pushed into hiding, or put on the spot by our jokes—even if we are unaware of it. So, jokes are not "just jokes," and words are not "just words." There are consequences for all of the things we say, after all.

Amen, brother.

Context matters. My ex girlfriend use to laugh at a certain derogatory name referring to putting something in your mouth. She'd laugh and say, "No one ever calls a woman that. if someone called me that, I'd be like 'Yeah, I do it and I'm really good at it.'"

It seems like everyone who wants to invoke the concept of the "PC Police" seems to think that people just choose a random word and say "xxxx" is offensive to me. In most cases where a word becomes socially offensive it isn't because a small, fringe group of people say it is. It is because a word has risen to the level where it is used to demean a class of people.
And for those whose have argued that "********" has a definition that doesn't imply malice, we aren't talking about its use in that context (I know that should be obvious). In this context calling someone a "dufus" is only meant to hurt.
To be honest I never really thought too much about the rampant use of the word guitard on this site, but the OP addressed its usage.
We are also not talking about political or philosophical discourse here. I firmly believe that someone has every right to express their point of view on an issue even if that view may be offensive. I do however feel that anyone's views should be expressed respectfully. And, in my opinion, there is a big difference between using a word like "dufus" and having a meaningful discussion about controversial topics.
I guess I think it is probably more important to me that my language or actions don't cause harm to someone than it is to say "I have a right to say this."

Funny, very little has been said here defending the feelings of the "guitard", the poor guitar player...
(not to diminish the insult to mentally handicapped)

Be careful what you all wish for. You may very well find yourselves on the receiving end one day.

It might be your song lyrics, or workplace conversation; but somewhere in the world, someone is going to be offended by something you say. Are you all that willing to be fired, shut down, or silenced, yourself? Don't think it can't happen. It already has.
