Can we please stop using "guitard"?

A fallacy huh? I suppose it's no coincidence you picked the one word thas sounds like phallusy to describe my opinion. You think you are so damn clever you arrogant jerk. Calling me dickish! Of all the damn nerve.

I don't even want to know what goes through your sick head when you think of "slippery slope". How did it get slippery?

You offend me. I choose to be offended by this and now we should not say fallacy or slippery slope anymore. Those words are hurtful and evil.

Suck on that, logic!

Right. Because that is exactly the same as when someone with Down Syndrome "choses" to be hurt when the other kids point to him and call him a "r*tard."

My god, 22 pages of comments to this point. This is exactly why it's futile to engage in these kinds of discussions online.
For those of you who want to keep using the term, or any term, for that matter, please do so. Someday you may or may not be convinced that using that term (or any term that is offensive) is not the right thing to do. There was a time when using other terms that are now widely regarded as offensive was quite acceptable. Societal norms shifted.
I also don't believe that anyone is suggesting that any words be "banned". All words are assigned meaning. Over time meaning and intent of words change.
I, for one, will be more conscious of how I use terms like guitard because I think it's important (for reasons I stated earlier). Others, please do as you wish.
JimmyM -- thanks for your thoughts on this topic and weighing in on the issue. I've always appreciated the technical and bass-related input you share so freely on this forum! Not only do you know your stuff, it sounds like you're a pretty good dude as well.
That's about all of got on this, now back to jazz vs. precision.
--peace out

Can we all just have a little fun and not be so easily offended?

You know, things were a lot more fun when we could all pick on each other and laugh at each other. I even love a good laugh at my own expense. This PC crap is boring.

I used to be in a band that played funk and soul with a white rhythm section, and then turned around and played Sweet Home Alabama with a black singer/keyboard player and a black guitarist. We used to make all kinds if jokes about it on the mic.

If we were playing a funk song that started on bass, the guitar player would say "Oh hell. White guy starting a funk song. Let me come over there and clap to get you started. Come on people, help each other out. White folks, y'all can teach us the chorus to Freebird in a minute."

Then when we got ready to do Sweet Home, I would say "Ladies and gentlemen, do not adjust your television sets. What you are about to see is real." (Cuz, you see, a black guy on guitar was about to start Sweet Home.)

We had a blast and the audience did too. That was up until the early 2000s. These days? No way. Couldn't get away with that at all today. We loved each other like family. We were just having fun. Odds are we would all be arrested for a hate crime in this stupid climate.

As for me, "guitard" is fine. But, then again, I don't get my panties in a wad when they say "basstard" either.

Can someone tell me when and why we got so serious? Cuz it just sucks.

Putting an end to gtard isn't going to solve anything for the mentally challenged, volunteering for Best Buddies may help change lives. Donating to research helps... Putting an end to a joke that is enjoyed by many wont accomplish much.

This was what I was thinking while plowing though this mess. Pick your battles. There are so many things done by individuals and organizations, including our government, that make life harder for people with disabilities. The use of "guitard" on TB is not even a tiny blip on that radar. I guess talk is cheap for the crusaders though. It's so much easier to stir up sh#tstorm on here than do something meaningful.

I think I have liked more posts in this thread than all others combined, from both sided of the fence. Lolz abound.

Being sensitive to minorities and disadvantaged groups is definitely important, but at the same time I feel like the balance has tipped the other way, and sometimes people are just trying to be politically correct about everything so they can get a "gold star". I find that in too many cases political correctness is just another fad movement that people are buying into to ease their conscience that they are "doing the right thing" (see slack-tivism), when there are much more important conversations to be had that will actually help people.

Well then they aren't guitards. What I find offensive is someone trying to modify my behavior by telling me what I can or cannot say, enough of the pc crap. You are implying that it's used to specifically degrade those who are disabled. A little insensitive to them, sure, while we're at it lets ban the use of the word stupid as it's degrading to anyone with low intelligence. And I find your use of the term douche bag offensive to women as it refers to a necessary hygienic practice.

Those "some folks" you refer to are basstards :)

I wanna triple-like this post

Seriously, you can find someone being offended about literally anything. Something CANNOT be derogatory without being offensive. If we want to get really technical, you shouldn't refer to special needs people as "********" either or designate them as such, they are Special Needs People. The term comes from "ritard" which IS a musical term meaning a slowed tempo, so in some ways you could say "guitard" is less offensive than calling someone the other name which is censored on here. Really making a lot out of not a big deal, if it bothers you then don't say and just ignore it when you read it. Unfortunately in this world people are going to say things you don't like from time to time.

This. All of this.

Blackhawk is not a racially insulting term like Redskin is. And I'm not even going to address the ridiculousness of dirt vs clean. The disingenuousness is thick in this thread!

The Fighting Illini (named after a specific tribe) were forced to stop using their logos, and I seem to remember there were those who wanted them to stop using the name also. I'm not all that certain there won't be a push to force the Blackhawks to stop using the name and/or the logo.
