what was really funny was that he called it a tonewood video and spent the whole video discussing and comparing pickup positioning.

And I'm still having trouble understanding how putting an amplifier and microphone between the bass and the listener would reveal more of the wood's true tone. Seems to me that a bass recorded direct, with no amp or mic (like my clips) would be a much better setup.
Good one Dan, this time there was little doubt in my mind, and the consensus says it all. This is where the wood really matters. The difference in tone is somewhat similar to the difference between my two main basses, one all maple neck and one maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Different bodies though.
No,, not so much, (HERE IT COMES!!) it is not so much the wood that makes the difference, it is the pick-ups, strings, & how bass is set up. In other words, you can buy expensive pick-ups & install in your correctly set up Hondo bass & it will almost sound as good as your buddies $3K bass. They will not admit it,,,
This is kind of like doing a blind taste test for 10" 12" and 15" cabs. I would not be able to tell them apart by listening to compressed audio files on my laptops headphone jack, but that doesnt mean they don't sound different.
The answer is that the recording isnt good enough to tell the difference. You should use a better mic and pre.

320K compression isn't going to make enough difference to erase tonal differences. Sorry. 99% of us could never hear the difference between 320K MP3 and WAV in a blind test. Especially on a bass track.
Where did you get the idea I used a mic? The bass was recorded direct for purest/cleanest signal.

then i guess that i better sell my UA 6176 and buy an Art preamp then..........................NOT!
already had an Art (among 14 other preamps) and for me, there's a HUGE differnece.
Yeah, there is a HUGE difference. The price tag.
Seriously though, not really the best comparison since the 6176 is a Preamp + EQ + Compressor (and a very good compressor at that, although not nearly as good as a real 1176).
Maybe I should do a new blind test with the ART Pro Channel vs. my drummer's API 7600 and Drawmer 1969.

yea i think you're exactly right man. i would presume to say that i have a pretty decent ear, and those clips sounded so similar that i got the two tabs i opened to play them confused.
agreed, he does seem to be one of these frustrated academic types. you'd be on edge too if it was your job to dispel the ignorance of the masses or whatever. sounds stressful to me.
i do think he had an interesting point about the pickup placement, and how a pickup closer to the bridge might bring out more of the wood's unique character. it might be cool to do a test with a jazz bass or stingray.
my opinion is that a difference in just the fretboard wood is almost impossible to discern. but if two basses are made with totally different woods for the body, neck, and fretboard (especially if the woods have noticeably different densities and so forth) then there might be a more audible difference.
so on one hand the "tonewood difference" seems like a bit of a hoax. but at the same time i know there's something that makes my warwick bass sound special to me, and i'm open to the idea that the wood could be part of it.
Cameron can really play! He just has strong opinions about things. I think it's good to have people passionately defending both sides, it makes things more interesting!

I'm coming in late to this as I couldn't hear the clips earlier in the day. I felt like many others:
A. Maple
B. Rosewood ( just based on the first note on the second track)
Although they did sound rather similar to me.
I definitely knew it was a Pbass over a Jbass as soon as I heard it.
I wonder if the two woods would sound less similar on a Jbass?
Perhaps the placement of the P pickup just doesn't offer enough tonal versatility to make the difference in fretboards more apparent.
