......I stopped smoking after 20 years 1 month before he died. I've been smoke free for 8 months now.

I am sorry to hear about your father. I have a feeling I will be losing my father soon as well.

On a good note.....CONGRATULATIONS on giving up smoking.

I am going to set a goal of helping five people quit smoking. Personally helping them, not just telling them to or they will die.

Can one acquire Bladder Cancer from smoking? If so, how?

Smoking does not give you bladder cancer, but smokers are more likely to get bladder cancer.

The poisons in smoke that's in your lungs gets into your blood and then is filtered through your kidney. The poisons are concentrated in your urine and in the bladder, it destroys the lining in the bladder making you a high risk for cancer.

You are wrong. It has been published in numerous places about the tobacco companies putting addictive chemicals like ammonia into their products to intentionally hook their customers. Literally speaking, they do "weed" themselves into one's pocket.

I'll be praying for you and your family. I know that it's harder on the family than it is on the patient. I've been battling cancer since last April and I just got a crappy CT scan last week. I'm still waiting to hear from more definitive tests this week and next. It's so hard to see my kids and wife have to make allowances for me when I can't do what I used to do, when I can't eat when I should eat, when I sleep for 17 hours a day. Be strong and know that we are all praying for you.

Wow, Deep sympathy to you and your family MJ. My dad is a smoker and has been for a long time. I have fail all my attempts to get him to quit. I am dredding the day that you have just experienced. Hopefully it will never happen. Hope your father makes it through. Stay strong.

What I think the saddest thing is when kids my age (I am 14) start smoking. This makes me so sad seeing how much it effects your life and your family. It is a very sad thing.

Lots of people succumb to cancer who live otherwise healthy lifestyles. Smokes aren't the only thing that causes it. The prevalence of chemicals in everything in our daily lives IMO is a worse risk factor than anything else. My cousin who is in very good physical condition just beat colorectal canter. I hope and wish the best for your pops. My mother (never a smoker) survived many bouts with cancer for many years, some of the best of her life, before the disease finally took her.

Mike, As someone who lost his father suddenly and unexpected to a heart attack (not smoking related) I can tell you to channel your anger into love for your father and make the most of his time left. Help him fight it, bladder cancer is not always terminal. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had the chance just to talk to my dad again.

Yes sir, you are correct. From what I have read, smoking is the #1 cause of cancer though. For that reason, and because my pop smokes, I am going to focus in on that.

I'm still mad actually. Not as mad as I was the other day, but mad. When I get mad, I work alot either around the house or at my job. I got to my office at 7:00AM today. It is now almost 5:45PM and I am still here.

Chris is absolutely right about saying it's much harder on your family. Chris and I have been exchanging health war stories as of late.
I was diagnosed again in Nov after being clean for 6 years (Testicular Cancer Seminoma Stage1) . This is the 2nd time around for me and it hurt me to see what my wife went through. Needless to say the holiday's were a complete mess!
Cancer is no joke. Fortunately and thank god I was already on a strict surveilence regimine from the first time around that it was caught very early for me. All I had to go through was major surgery to remove the tumor and I'm on the road to recovery, Back on my ten year (Forever) survielence regimine.. My thought's and prayers go out to anybody no matter how they got Cancer,, It's a disease that has no age/race/ whatever discriminations. Be Strong MJ....

Sorry dude, I know how it is. My dad has a lymphatic cancer.

My Dad died of complications from Diabetes 5yrs ago but pretty much everyone else died from cancer, they all smoked like chimneys. Prayers and good vibes to Mike, Chris, Henry and to Vox Populi (a Poulsbo neighbor).
My wife went through breast cancer a couple of years ago and that was a horrible experience. Thank God she is healthy now.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I lost mine to lung cancer when I was only 13... that was 1966. He was 50 when he checked-out! Yes, he smoked cigarettes, but hell, back then damn near EVERYONE smoked. They hadn't even put warnings on cigarette packages yet, and they sold for 30 cents a pack back then! There have been tremendous strides in cancer research since then, but lung cancer is still pretty much a one-way ticket... unfortunately.

I was a damn fool, as I started smoking right about the time my dad died. I gave them up for good July 4, 1995. I can only hope my body will have enough time to repair the damage I did to it for all of those years. However, I am at this very moment in recovery from having 1/2 of my thyroid removed... last week Thursday. I had a tumor on the right side of my thyroid gland. I was told this past Tuesday that there were no cancer cells going on, and since I still have the other half of my thyroid gland, I won't have to take Synthroid pills for the rest of my life. I guess a great big "Whew..." is called for!
