Okay so here is my second SB5000 just in, the lean, mean, green, MACHINE!!!
I'm not really into painted bass bodies, in particular green-but that is one nice looking green bass!!! The fretboard, pickups and hardware really create a nice contrast and set the green off!!!
A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!
It's finally here! I ordered an SB5000 on Aug 11 and the brown truck dropped it off Oct 13. The controls are Vol, Vol, Tone(Act/Pass), Stacked Treble/Bass. I call my spec the blue pearl:
I sold a very nice Lakland 55-94D to make room for this but it was the right move tone wise for me. I was looking for an ash/maple, single-coil, 5-string with a Jazz bass vibe. I almost went with a Sadowsky MV5 but when the one I had my eye on was sold and I watched the YouTube videos (especially Carl's killer funk loop), the SB5000 won me over. This bass really gives you a lot for the money. The workmanship and setup is excellent and the figuring on the birdseye board stunning.
This bass nails the tone I was after. I use it with a GB Shuttle Max 12.0 and an Uber 212T cab. The tone is meaty with good string to string balance and the neck lives up to the raves it has received - excellent comfort and playability. After adjusting knobs back and forth I ended up in active mode with bass and treble flat and both volume knobs about 7/8 on. The bottom is full but not too big with nice low mid punch and a bit of upper mid grind when you dig in. The tone control lets you fine tune the treble with the right amount of cut but still smooth, not too harsh.
I have an alder/rosewood Valenti PJ5 with Nordy pickups which is wonderful for fingerstyle and pick but for me is not a slap machine. Slap is not my forte but I enjoy working on the technique and find occasional use for it. The SB5000 is a slap monster and great for fingerstyle too. The ash/maple, single-coil combination with Carvin's preamp and tone stack has a wonderful sound which should sit very nicely in a live band mix. This is definitely a keeper.
