Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 6!

I guess I just don't see the point of stringing flats through the body.

Anyway, my SB4k came today. Played it for about 5 minutes, getting some weird tones and wasn't real fond of the setup (but 3000 miles is hell on a setup, so I'm not judging). Did a trussrod adjustment and reset the action. Better, but still some weird tones. Adjusted the trim pot to even out the active/passive volumes (it was hitting my compressor pretty hard in active mode). I really couldn't figure out where these woofy tones were coming from. I had to take the bridge off to swap around some parts, thats when I noticed the strings going through the body. When it had been strung the strings had been twisted (that's where those funky tones were coming from). I swapped out the chrome bridge plate for a black one, kept the chrome saddles and intonated it, strung it with an old set of chromes, replaced all the pickguard and control plate screws with black screws, replaced the control knobs with black ones, and installed flushmount straplocks.

Very sharp bass. I really like the J99s with alder body and maple FB.

That's pretty sweet looking...I like the gloss top over the wood grain. To me, that bass is a Fender-killer!
I just ordered a walnut top with full gloss on body and neck..these humid outdoor gigs in Houston don't really agree with my love of oil-finished woods, so I'm hoping the gloss will offer the protection.

Does anyone else feel like their other basses sound touch blurry after playing a SB for a while :hiding::hiding::hiding:

I swear that pickup spacing does that for me.

I know its not a good comparison but it was like a magic trick when I was live mix A/Bing the Squier Vintage Modern Jazz bass and the SB5000. When I played the SB it was clear in the mix, play the VMJ voila, its gone! Felt like David Copperfield.

I hear you Jarrett...

All my basses (except for 1) are on the brighter & punchy side.

I spent the last week working on new tracks during the day using my SBs and at night playing other basses...I could still hear myself but it was certainly blurrier to me ear after playing SBs all day long and listing to them through some really good headphones.

If Status did a limited run of graphite necks for Carvin, like they have done for EBMM, it would be deadly...The penetration just might be too much. (I would still get one though :hiding::D )

I kind of try for a "blurry" sound. I play flats and often use a foam mute at the bridge. But I think thats kind of a different kind of blurry. The SB seems to work really well like that because of how punchy it is. I get a super punchy and strong fundamental and then all the overtones get blurry and warm.
Thanks Jarrett, for talking me out of getting the humbuckers. The J99s are killer.

My bass came in today. Bought it from a Guitar Center in Wisconson. It's an SB4001. Nice and light. Just unpacked it. Wanted to share pics.:D:D:D:bassist::bassist:

Yep, I'm now convinced. Carvin just makes really awesome basses! Almost everyone I've ever seen, all the various combinations, well except for some not for me, are all just amazing, the grain, fit, colors, etc. Adding my intimate knowledge of their crazy awesome playability and sound, and voila, you have instant attack of heavy GAS. Congrats to you. Now where did the wife hide my checkbook..

I have the separate volume pots for the two pickups. I have noticed that about 80% of the volume adjustment seem to be in the last 20% of the adjustment. I can still get the tone I like, but my G&L JB2 has more of an adjustmet range.
