Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 6!

OK here is the skinny.
I really like them and are built like tanks.
The DuraTex is just the best material to use.

I think all companies should offer it.

The sound is very flattish. So be aware I think they sound best with some EQ-ing. However you can get any type of sound with them.
You can get that Berg type sweet sound with these cabinets with more natural lows.

Let me put it this way.

I sold (2) Berg AE410's and Acme B2 to replaced them with 2 BRX410NEO and 1 BRX210NEO. Thats right I moved the Bergs for these cabinets.

I have no gas in this area what so ever.

The BRX210NEO is the one I am interested in. Since I end up using a single 2x10 at 95% of my gigs now, I was thinking of getting a 4 ohm version of the 2x10 BRX so I can draw down more power from my head. The head is 800 watts at 4 ohms, but I don't think I'd ever need to get close to using that with a single cab, but I'd like to have the option to crank it up to the 600 watt range if needed.

I'm using the SWR Golight Jr. 2x10 right now. It weighs 36.5 lbs so it looks like the BRX 2x10 would be 10 lbs or more heavier than that. The SWR has the rat fur on it which I don't like. Also at 36.5 lbs and with the spring loaded handles, I get some vibration noises from it on occasion that are annoying.

I had been kicking around the idea of getting a little more sturdy cab with a better covering. While I don't want it to be heavier. it might be good that it is to reduce vibration. I wonder if I could get them to install the rubber feet on the side so I could stand it vertically?

I recently bought a new 4ohm 4x10 from them and I wish I had bought 2 8ohm 2x10s. I think being able to bring half the rig to small shows would have been a better choice. Then if i needed more power I could just grab the second 2x10 and I would up my wattage and speaker surface.
I wish carvin would come out with a 2x12. They have a combo amp with a 12 but no standalone 12 cabs.

i have a carvin bx1200 and a carvin brx neo 4X10. i've used it at bigger venues for the last two years (i generally use a genz-benz shuttle 6.0 with a 1X12 neo when i have the option.)

the head is awesome and built like a tank. i seriously have to recommend that anyone out there who can still find one of these around should get it immediately. i don't know why they discontinued this model. it's MORE than enough power for multi-cab confingurations at 1200 watts bridged, and yet i can still run smaller cabs with it easily. i love that amp, and will never part with it.

on the other hand, the cab is a harder story to tell. i play mostly funk and jazz, so maybe it's just me and my needs, but i'm thinking of selling the cab. i have used it for many rock cover band gigs as well, and it performs fine in those settings, but if you are a person who likes a truly well-defined tone i don't know if i'd recommend it...although for the price it's still a great deal. it's great for raw power, but IMO it lacks that modern clarity that many bassists are looking for these days...it sounds like older tech to me. if your goal is to get onstage and rage at full volume, and play lots of gigs where there is limited P.A. or no subs, then this might fit your needs. i will be looking elsewhere...thinking about pairing the 1200 watt carvin with a Schroeder cab now.

Jarret you could add that yourself really easily actually.

If you want the neo 210 get it now because they are going away.
The 410 are now gone and I'm not sure how many 210s they have left.

BTW I do use my 210 vertically...No issues. Also the cab might weight more then the SWR but the handles make it really easy to move.

I respectfully disagree with this.
I'm playing a lot of funk as well where I'm the primary instrument and I need clarity.

I would not tweak it like I would a Berg they need a little more highs due to the design of that box, ect but if you turn up the twitter and more highs and lower mids, cut the upper mids a bit and BAM Berg tone (but better IMHO with lows being thicker without boom).

I would have to agree with this. i find it very easy to get a clear well defined "hi fi" tone from these cabs.
Of course, it all comes down to the amp you're pairing with it. Some amp's natural tonal characteristics may fight the tonal characteristics of the cab. It's all a matching game.

The SB seems to work really well like that because of how punchy it is. I get a super punchy and strong fundamental and then all the overtones get blurry and warm.

Why / how did he talk you out of the MM humbucker? I'm considering the MM/J configuration on an SB5000. I used to own an LB75 with the MM/J setup and it sounded great.

I never even considered the mm humbucker, I was considering the stacked humbuckers. I prefer the sound of a single coil in the bridge placement. I'm still waiting on that single spaced humbucker that hits the classic single coil tone. I have heard good things about carvin's new humbuckers, but the buzz surrounding the j99s is too hard to ignore.

I just placed an order for one. I didn't realize they were on sale or being phased out. They said they have 7 left and when they are gone, there will be no more due to the hike in price of Neodymium. No more Neodymium cabs of any type at Carvin actually. $438 shipped versus $650 for my SWRs.

Oh that's what you were talking about. I would definitely go with the J99s too.

I was just thinking an MM/J configuration because I get tired of jazz pickup tone all the time. Of course if I found a deal on a nice used SB5000 with J99s, I'd probably grab it.

That's too bad. I've heard great things about the Carvin neo line. Jim Bergantino stopped making his neo line because of the increase in cost of neodymium too. I wonder how long it will be before other manufacturers drop thier neo lines?
