Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 6!

Any of you SB5000 owners can offer advice on the pickups? J99 versus j99a and j99ar. What combination is the best for that Marcus type sound? I have a bass w/ j99a and j99ar and I was wondering if the other pickup combinations were better?

If you really want that Marcus tone, then go with a 'Ash body/ Maple board' combo...That with the SBs already having that 70's spacing you will get it right off the bat.

I can tell you with first hand experience since I have that combo.

I had a cool experience this weekend. I let a guy (good player) sit in and play my rig on a couple of songs at this past weekend's gig. I got to sit in the crowd about 35 feet away and listen to the sound of my rig in a band mix while someone else played it... and it sounded really good, fantastic even :D Reminded me how good the equipment is in my current rig.

My rig is a Carvin SB5000 -> GK MB800 -> SWR Golight Jr 2x10 and I am happy with it.

I'm about to build me one of those. Going to order a SS fretted, Maple boarded neck for my Ash SB4000.

Oh......!

That blue one is off the hook! If I had gotten the SB instead of the B50, it would have been very similar.( I didn't, for the simple reason that I like P-style bodies better....and anyway, mine has the exact same electronics.) But those are two exceptionally beautiful basses!

Did you string them through the body?
I ordered my SB with flats and they strung them through the body. I thought this was odd. I'm pretty much calling them trash and have to replace them. Who strings flats through the body?

Chromes can go through body no problem. I've had sets for years strung that way. You gotta trim the silk on the ball end to make it work, though...
