What kind of tricks do you mean with the EQ? I have to run a slightly abnormal EQ with my GK MB800 and the SWR 2x10 already. I cut everything and roll back the highs quite a bit.

On topic, I'm also thinking about buying a SB4000

Oh that's what you were talking about. I would definitely go with the J99s too.

I was just thinking an MM/J configuration because I get tired of jazz pickup tone all the time. Of course if I found a deal on a nice used SB5000 with J99s, I'd probably grab it.

I can see how the mm/j would be appealing. If I had another grand to drop on a bass I would seriously consider that. I also wish Carvin offered a P-bass pickup. I wouldn't be surprised if they started offering a p-bass pickup in the next couple of years. It's become a very popular option for many other manufacturers, and carvin's recent successes with their pickups and electronics would lead me to believe they will branch out.
If they come out with a p, i'd go for an mm/p setup with the sb body. I think that would give some nice tonal options.

With the options I want, a new SB5000 would run me about $1,200. Add a fancy top and that goes up. That's still a great deal for a really nice American made instrument, but I can't justify spending that much until I start working again.

I couldn't believe how good they sound for how cheap they were. I was expecting something so much more budget constructed. My only complaint is towards the weak tolex they use. I don't even think it's real tolex, it tears fairly easy..

No tricks, wizard spells, or funny hats (I wish there where funny hats).

I just find the BRXs flatter then most with an accentuation in the upper mids. So I feel they benefit to what I think is a great modern bass sound with some EQ tweaking. Based on what you are saying that you do with the SWR, you should dig the Carvin BRX

To bad they did not use the DuraTex on those amps...You would have no issues if that was the case.

Just got my new Carvin catalog the other day and they are now offering a 3-way 15/8/T bass cabinet. I cant find it on the website but its in the catalog... BRX15.3, $479, 4 ohms, 600 watts, and 72 lbs.

Yeah I have 2 of the LS1503's already as well...Im sure it is very similar, but the BRX15.3 appears to be larger in the catalog.

Lunch break and I thought I would do a small amature review of my "new" SB4001.

The bass weighs 8.75 lbs. Neck is satin finish. I really like the way the neck feel and plays. Things seem to come easier on this neck.
It seem to me that tweeking the adjustments for different tones takes smaller adjustments on this bass than my G&L JB2 or Fender Jazz. Not sure what that means but just an observation.
The finish on the head and body is absolutely spellbinding. Did I say that the neck feels fantastic?
I have 4 basses right now and when I pick up the SB my wife asks which one I'm playing because it sound so "rich".
This bass really has me thinking about selling the G&L JB2 now. I've been wanting a Bromberg but I need to give up something for it and now that I have this sb4000 "jazz" bass I'm not sure I need the JB2 any more.
By the way the USA JB2 is an excellent jazz bass. I like it better than my old fender american jazz. Actually the JB2 was my favortite Jazz bass until now.

I've been wanting a Bromberg but I need to give up something for it and now that I have this sb4000 "jazz" bass I'm not sure I need the JB2 any more.

Just got my Carvin SB5000 in today. I won't have a chance to plug it in until tomorrow. The neck feels sweet and it feels like it's top notch quality. The finish is so freaking stunning and the bass is pretty light! Here are some pics..
