Cheapest/easiest way to get Taurus sounds?

FYI, we have the BASYN MIDI Kits and MIDI controllers available at http://www.basyn.com/zencart. We're also planning on reintroducing the BASYN Analog Synth soon, as soon as we work out some issues with the company that manufactures the circuit boards for us.

I myslef play in a Yes tribute band and I use primarily use the BASYN analog synth. But recently I started using the BASYN MIDI controller in conjunction with a very nice (and free) Taurus VST Plugin, which sounds incredibly authentic.

I have a somewhat overkill setup right now as I use a Studiologic MP117 pedal (with 17 keys instead of 13) to control a Moog Voyager Rack Mount. As I said, it's a bit overkill and they're both hogs to carry around, but I had the Moog, so couldn't resist the idea of pedals when I ran into a set in a local store (and I only went in to buy new strings...).

I'm still trying to get the hang of playing the pedals, but it is a lot of fun. My bands guitaris is also thinking of getting pedals so we can work up nice synth backgrounds.

But the sound of the Voyager through my bass gear...oh dear...:hyper:

Yeah baby. That's what I'm hoping for with my Little Phatty. I swear, I wish they had a rackmount version of that too....

Probably not. However, most people don't have 3K to plunk down on a synth engine for bass pedals (or other) either... I wouldn't say the little phatty isn't full featured though....

Dunno what you mean about target audience....not really a fan of being pigeon-holed...

It's called the Little Phatty because it's designed to be a machine for PHAT hip-hop bass lines. Of course, it does TONS more, but that's it's main selling point and what most folks use it for.

In a way, the Little Phatty is a BETTER design than the Voyager, which retains the classic minimoog setup. The LP is more streamlined and in a way, simpler to use in performance. However, it' only got a few knobs so pick your parameters carefully.

IMO the biggest thing missing in the LP is a noise generator. I mean ***?

Also, isn't the rack version of the Voayger more like 2 grand instead of 3?

The "rack" (tabletop) version of the DSI Prophet 08 is also appealing. Different vibe from the moogs but very versatile - polyphonic, and with an integrated step sequencer. One of these days I will pick one up as the compliment to my Voyager - they go for about 1000 used

Thanks for the info. I have GAS for a Moog synth but the Little Phatty doesn't have a noise generator so that's not going to work. I'm thinking of buying an old Rogue. Seems to be the only one you can get for under a grand. Would love a Minimoog/Voyager though.

The Rogue is awesome! Especially if you like tuning your synth every half hour.

There is a modular add-on from moog that includes a noise generator and a couple other features - they had it bundled with the LP for a while, and for good reason.

Grygrx, did you ever get that extra processor from the holiday deal? I know Moog can take their sweet time with these things...

Gotcha on the hip hop bass - you're right, they are so much more than that.

I was thinking of the price of the reg voyager....

Would love to see a sequencer in the phatty...

Well the current Phatty has an arpeggiator at least. Even the Voyager doesn't have that (then again, no minimoog ever has)

And you can get a new Voyager for closer to 2500, or 2000 if you're willing to go used

just make sure it's not a really old one, which will need a hardware upgrade

Drifting out of tune is a "feature" of old school moogs that was corrected when the company restarted with the Voyager and LP designs.

If I were you I would go for a used Voyager, or an LP and a Moogerfooger CP-251 to add a noise gen and a bunch more features

I do not recommend investing in used synths. 20 years ago the prices were great and there was nothing current that compared. These days, vintage stuff costs collector prices, so they are no longer worth it IMO, with rare (and expensive) exceptions.

Another thing to consider is software synths, though I know that turns a lot of people off around here. But there are significant advantages. Myself, I use analog AND software synths.

There are also some very appealing modelling synths out there. Again, I know I'm turning folks off but you can get great sounding, very practical modelling synths for under 500.

If you are down in SD proper, check out Freedom guitar - don't spend any money there (though the younger dude at the counter is a nice guy) but DO play with their v1 Voyager for an hour to get an idea of how cool it is. GC in La Mesa used to have a Little Phatty and a Prophet 08 you could play with, but I think those are gone (guess they might be back, it's been several months since I've been there)

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I need a used Voyager when I get the real deal. I do use software and have been doing so for a year now. I have SampleMoog, Minimonsta, Mtron (mellotron emulator - I absolutely love mellotrons), Synthi Avs (pretty much a VSC3 emulator) and the version of Analog Factory that came with my MBox2 Mini.

If all you need is a monophonic, analog synth, then maybe Dave Smith's Mopho would be good. It's relatively cheap (compared to any Moog synth and most others too) and it has lots of features (the sequencer for example) and it's a small box, so it's easy to lug around. The sound is different from Moog, but I think one could get close enough to a Taurus especially as it has a sub-oscillator. Brown note territory...

The sequencer part and the smallness are the reason I've been thinking of getting one. Carrying bass, Moog rack and other stuff around to practice and elsewehere is a bit of a chore and yes, I am getting older and lazier. The Mopho would fit in a bass bags side pocket nicely. And I realize that I am writing this to convince myself..

yeah, there's been a lot of talk about the mopho around these parts lately and it is great

I wonder if anybody has a clip of "taurus sounds" using the mopho!

Very cool! I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get another board when I get around to re-doing mine, which I fried. ( :( )

One question - what do you recommend doing as far as the connection between the note switches and the board? Do you use the same connector in your pre-built controllers that you include in the kit? Any chance I could get a picture of how that's set up?

Also, you don't have a drilling template for mounting the circuit board, do you? :)

edit: As for synths, the Mopho is going to be the jam, I think. I love the Micron but it's such a pain to program and you don't really need the keys in this application.

Ouch... dude you better change all your passwords and info immediately. I clicked the link (using safari) and got the same notice about it being reported as a phishing scam, and when I clicked the link to let me through, the page was empty with no directory... Sounds sketchy, hope you get it worked out!:scowl:
