Turned out to be a luau-themed lunch for the benefit of Children's Hospital. One of those office-culture things where most folks aren't really gonna boogie, because they have to work with these people every day. Still, it's an excuse to stay away from the desk for a while, so they do attend. And you wouldn't want to miss Ralph from Accounting in a grass skirt, would ya? Somebody had some dirt on poor Ralph to get him to do that! Or maybe he's just a nut...

We had 2 one-hour sets ready. Shortly after we arrived the guy in charge told us we'd be playing one set of about 35 minutes. Hmmm, a change of plan? After our set we were told we'd come back after the hula dancers and the fire-stick guy. So we wound up playing two, about 80 minutes total.

Haven't heard how much was raised.

Next gig: tomorrow night with On The Bus at Potomac Grill, Rockville MD. Time to drag out my best tie-dye shirt! Peace out!

first days gig went pretty well. i nailed this tricky 7/8 part in the live version of "touch, peel, stand." i screwed up "enemy" though because the bass i was playing was tuned half a step too low. went through an entire verse before i noticed. :rollno:

turned out to be the acoustic guitars were tuned differently than usual because later he played "down town" a half step too low and i again had to switch basses.

but there were parts that were just really my bad. not many though. so it was a'ight for the first show. the people in the crowd enjoyed it and gave me props/took pictures/etc. so it must not have been so bad.

tonight we play OK city. woot. gonna try to top last night's show.

Have a couple of outdoor gigs this weekend...yesterday was 3:30 in the afternoon in near 90 degree heat, and the instruments were nearly impossible to keep in tune! Lots of guitars, mando, banjo, fiddle, etc....those guys were going nuts...I fared a bit better with the bass, but then again, I was making no instrument switches during the show.

How does everyone else combat the situation?.....In this case direct sun, then partial shade, breeze from the stage fans......ugghh.

This was a fun gig, though not quite as fun as when we played the medical marijuana clinic across the street. We had a pretty good crowd, mostly of people who knew us and people who were still there for dinner. I had a little bit of tone trouble during the first few songs of the first set. I definitely need to tweak some knobs going from a small carpeted studio to a large hardwood floored and wood paneled room and it would have been nice if we had a little more time to sound check. But the audience really dug us and it was a lot of fun.

We played two shows this weekend. First was the small Italian restaurant went over very well they were dancing and singing along with the songs all night. Second gig was a Father's Day gig on Sunday at a Biker bar 6PM start went okay people starting showing up more and more in our last set around 9:30 and we were out at 10PM so when we were calling it a night they, were just getting started and wanted us to play more. We did two more songs and that was it for us they weren't happy but, it was a 6-10 gig well advertised so we did our part. got home by 11:15 great weekend home early both nights.We are off for a while after this our drummer is on vacation so we are playing again till July 9th.

It went pretty well. The crowd was not the biggest ever, but the owner seemed pleased enough. Our sub guitarist for the evening did a good job, much better fit than the last guy we had. Unfortunately, he subs but doesn't want to join. So the search for a Bob Weir-esque person who's a joiner goes on.

Next gig: Brandy Stills @ Addie's, Manassas VA this Fri & Sat. Country time, no tie-dyed shirt for that! Well, probably not...

We were "required" to load no later than 5PM, and scheduled to go on at 11PM. We put on a hell of a show and got a considerably better response than the headlining act. When it came time to go over the headcount of guests by band that the front end had done...the hadn't done a thing. They then tried to force us to sign a contract to accept the minimum guarantee for $100... that's total, not each, and there are 5 of us so $20 a pop for 6 hours of our time, theye wouldn't even validate our parking, in their lot, which was $35, so we had to PAY to play. 189 people $12 cover. This just doesn't add up. F-The hard rock:mad: seriously. Really at this point I don't care about the money as much as the fact that at the end we got pimped, straight up. This is warning to you all, Don't ever play there, they will screw you and cheapen your art...

Filling in on bass for a friend's band at a private party event Saturday.

The lead up to this has been fun for me because it forced me to learn or relearn a great big bunch (fifty-eight) songs I didn't know or haven't touched in ages.

Notably, some Led Zeppelin (I've never played JPJ's stuff before), Prince and Paul Simon. (Yeah, try to wrap your head around how THAT all goes together)

Should be fun. No pressure and I get to play with a great bunch of musicians.

I'm playing two shows this weekend for the band I'm auditioning for. One is a gun rights rally almost in Canada and the other is a benefit for a local motorcycle club. I've been practicing with these guys for just over a month now and it's down to me and this other guy. I saw him play with them last week and we're pretty much on par as far as playing is concerned, but I'm pretty sure I have him beat when it comes to stage presence. (it's a punk band and moving around is what I do)
So I'm really excited to see how this weekend goes for several reasons. One is so I can see how we play together live and show them what Im made of, and the other is to see if I can stand being in a Suburban with them for 4 hours.

Launching our brand new CD tonight at Jammin Java in Vienna VA. So excited! Haven't played a show since March because we've been 100% focused on getting the CD done. What a major project.

Tonight we launch it and tomorrow we begin marketing / promoting and booking gigs (instead of turning them down like the last 5 months).

Playing a "last gig" for a couple of months with my funk band. Singer and his wife are about to have a baby, so we need a hiatus from performing.
Playing a great local venue, hopefully we'll draw well, and regardless we'll have a great time.

We sold out Jammin Java and had a great show.

One thing I was not prepared for - opening the show on my electric upright bass - that thing draws ALL THE ATTENTION. I couldn't have had more eyeballs on me if I were on fire. And I'm not terribly good at EUB, and it was dark, and it's hard to monitor my intonation with earplugs in, and.. and.. It was a terrifying way to start a show for me.

But after that, I think we rocked the doors off that place. Whew! That's over, now it's time to promote and get our CD out to everybody in the biz.

I just had my first ever gig tonight. I took this band workshop, and tonight was the gig for a bunch of the bands. We were the first on at 7:30. We got a pretty good sized crowd going, and the set was good. The band was a 9 piece - 2 guitars, 2 singers, drums, keys, trumpet, sax, and me on bass. We played a set of rock, soul, and r&b covers that was pretty well received.

Overall I think it was a good first gig. I got over the massive adrenaline rush after the first song. Kinda wish I had a redo on that first song though.

Oh yeah, and driving home I witnessed an accident where a car blew out its back tired, hit the center divider, and then spun across all 4 lanes of a major freeway before resting on the shoulder. Both of the girls in the car were ok, and they miraculously didn't hit anyone else.

What a night.

Nothing out of the ordinary: Saturday was a spectacular view of the Hudson river, interrupted by the horns of the trains going up and down on the other side of the river. The place was so in the middle of nowhere that after the gig, the only place that was open for snacks was a gas station/convenience store, 11 miles away.
This weekend, I only have a wedding at the Westchester Country Club. I look foward to resting during July. Teaching school and gigging every weekend (multiple times) has drained me of energy. I need the break to continue my recovery from cancer. I did 18 gigs during May/June in addition to teaching full time.
