If it's humid, I would be wary of those flats, blip. If they get damp, they get sticky and it slows you down a LOT.

Okay, thanks for that. I have no idea about using flats. I'll bring a jazz bass backup. Thank you for the tip.
I played a P with flats at a warm outdoor gig in Virginia last weekend, humidity about 90% (it stormed before we finished, so I guess humidity = 100%). No problems. Good luck with yours.
Last night, we played North By Northwest, an upscale brewpub and eatery in Northwest Austin.
Very nice place! I was glad that I dressed up a little bit. All the beer they sell is brewed on-site, and the food is Texas gourmet. They have valet parking...I ran around the cones blocking off the reserved spaces and found me a valet so I could go load in without going through the very-long line. They were very nice and helpful.
The place has a main dining hall, and then a covered deck surrounded by trees. Shady and breezy, with roll-down plastic coverings in case of rain. The stage was made from large wood planks, and creaked in a solid and satisfying way.
We got $50 each, plus tips, three beers each, and half priced food.
The audience was interested and appreciative. We kept our show more subdued than we do for a bar gig, so that they could converse without yelling at each other. Lots of people went to the management asking to have us back again, and our waiter took notes that people asked him to pass along to say the same. He even made his own, positive notes!
Our waiter brewed the beer we drank...a light beer with a deep golden color and plenty of flavor. I also tried their excellent amber ale with my food.
The FOOD!!! OMG, it is wonderful! I had an appetizer plate that was plenty big to be a meal, for me. Quail wrapped in bacon and grilled, served on a bed of baby spinach and stuffed with goat cheese and roasted jalapeno. The sauce tasted like a delicious combination of raspberry, ancho chilis, and teriaki. It was accompanied by a large slice of polenta, flavored with sweet/hot peppers.
An appreciative audience, fine beer, and fine food. I can't wait to go back!
Tonight...Boomerz. Sports bar with music. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, people are usually just wow'ed that I play fretless in an alternative rock band, but the Carvin just puts them over the edge! I've never heard a better fretless, and I'm planning on getting a fretted in the near future.
The Whisky is awesome - some of the nicest and most professional sound people and bookers in Hollywood (to my experience at least).

im playing at a relay for life tonight at union college in schenectady new york. i think we are the only band playing so we will have close to a 2 hour set, mostly originals with 4 or 5 covers thrown in.

Sounds like a great gig!
We're doing a bunch of those this summer. It's good to clarify that those are cancer fund raising event and not anti-abortion rallies! We've kind of gotten in the groove of playing half a dozen or so a summer for the past few years. Sometimes the sound is great, running through the stadium. One time it was a two channel radio shack pa, needless to say that became a duo gig. It's good to do the ones you know are fun and well attended the sketchy ones can be really horrible experieces.
These gigs are fun because people listen and appreciate your time, and when playing at night they will often light remembrance illuminaries and that is very beautiful and moving indeed.

This just after 2 shows at the world famous International Barbeque Festival last weekend. Sound cheesy I know but thousands came to stuff themselves on all maner of charred animal flesh and got force feed by the demon rock n roll, like it or not.
Our plan for world domination is in full swing.

We played a farmer's market last year and they guy running the place was like "so you guys don't play that rock n' roll stuff do ya?' We're like, nope. And then proceded to rock the joint. Don't think we'll do that this year!
Ok it's the morning of the gig and i'm loading up the car. It's not rainy but very humid and overcast, a little cold. My hands are feeling cold just from being outside for a few minutes. I was going to start with the pbass warm up and see how it goes. I've got a newly built jazz that is a little sketchy. Rather than bring three basses I think I had better just bring my standby jazz bass.

Pretty big weekend. We opened Andy's show with Glen Campbell as guest. Had to rehearse Andy's new lineup and tunes we do with Glenn most of thursday, had the show with 15 coaches (around 1,600 total), then did an after hours gig with pop/funk group with singer Jake Simpson after the show. Everything went well, except the after hours gig was in a room NOT set up for bands at all and it's ridiculously loud in there. hard tile floor, and surrounded by glass...yay
It really was! I love the old dark-n-smoky bars, but to play such a lovely and classy place was a lot of fun.
The gig at Boomerz wasn't too bad. It was definitely a sports bar audience. They were watching the Spurs/Suns play for most of the night. They did listen, though, which was good. And one of the backup singers from Ro-Tel & The Hot Tomatos (she's a Hot Tomato) got up and sang with us. Very cool!

The rain held off until I was home unpacking. Glad for that. I used the pbass for the whole show playing about half of the time with a pick, which was the first time in 20 years of playing that i've even tried that.
We had an hour set and not having practiced since our last gig we had really good energy even though we dropped a few parts. Good show, all new material but a couple. We've been mixing new recordings so even though we haven't been practicing we've been listening to the new songs 17 times a night so we have them down. Fun show.

Evening birthday party was for the head of some bank in his mansion. Got overtime because they had 90 minutes of speeches/presentations.
