hey mimaz, yesterday's went awesome on the 21st. that place has an amazing jukebox. it was our buddy joe klug's b-day, so right after our intro just before we dove into our first song, we had a bunch of girls pouring garbage bags full of balloons on the crowd, and a bunch of dudes got joe with silly string. it looked pretty amazing from the stage. we played a really really tight set, even though i was playing balloon volleyball with the crowd throughout most of it.

ANYWAYS, this weekend we're heading to Harrisonburg, VA. for the triumphant return of Lex Vegas saturday night. those guys are like brothers to us, so i'm sure it will be totally nuts, and the after party will hurt really bad (last time we were there, i used a tazer on myself, nuff said). we're playing a joint called Complex with Lex Vegas, and Aggrocrag. It will be AWESOME!

Sat 5/5 Cinco De Mayo party all Autumn all night we get started at 10 drinking contests for band shirts..beads wildness good rock and roll looking forward to this new club for us with a future rebooks. :bassist:

Cinco De Mayo party at the Outta The Way Cafe in beautiful Derwood MD. Never been there before... I keep getting this mental image of folks walking up and down going "derrrr, derrrr"...
Extra added attraction for this gig - I will be presenting the break music. Got a disc full of obscure goodies all ready to go. Yup, after a few of my custom-selected favorites, they'll be more than ready to get the band back onstage! That'll be good... right?

well i didn't check in before but my band had a gig Friday. It was an interesting time to say the least.

First of all we are a 4 piece jamband from northampton, ma (2 guitars, bass, drums). The show was a 3-day festi on a semi-famous glass blower's farm. There was about 50 people there when we played and about 300 by the time the sunset. The crowd was a mix of woodstock vets, dead-heads, phish-heads, and the typical neo-hippie tour rats that you see at festivals. The headliners for the night were "Shakedown" which as you can guess is a dead cover band and they were pretty good.

So we start our journey off in the lead guitarists jeep (just me and him) and my cooler shifts so worrying it spilled on the equipment so we open the latch and the cooler is fine but my head falls flat on the ground. So we continue on assuming it's fine. We get there 30 min before we are on and find out the drummer and rhythm guitarist on their way still (in two seperate cars/routes). So we are just thinking positive like we'll just have a little jam if they are late. So the band on before us starts breaking down at 10 of 7 (7 to 7:50pm was our slot). The organizers luckily put on a guy doing accoustic between sets. So by 6:10 both guys arrived and we are rushing the drummers crap on stage. But we can't find a little metal rod he needs for his highhat. After 5 minutes of searching we find it. During all this I found out that my amp was smoked from the fall so I'm only going through the PA and the soundmen aren't too happy about that but they were cool about it. So finally we are ready we do a halfa** sound check cosisting of "can we check the bass" and "turn up the monitor's" then we are like well we got bout 30 minutes so let's just do this. So we abandon our setlist which usually isn't a problem but when you are cramming it all into 30 minutes and are already stressed it becomes a problem really quick.

So are opening jam goes solid we sound fine, the people are diggin it. Once the vocals come in the singer can't hear himself at all on stage because my bass is pounding through the monitors along with the vocals according to the soundguy after (but we think something else was up because the other singer could hear fine). Regardless he abandons singing for the most part. So now we are just jamming his song so we jam out into the other singers songs and everthings cool again. The rest goes fine until we enter our last song from a segway on the previous song. I could tell the tempo was WAYYYYYYYYY to fast and we've always had problems going too fast during this particular song. The drummer must have known but we attempted it anyway and we just completely fell apart. Basically stopped the song (after the verse already started even) and then the drummer just came in with a slower beat and we started it over. The people didn't mind. The song went fine but we were pretty bummed out about the whole day. We got alot of good comments and I think we cared more than the people listening did.


But there is a good ending. After alot of beer and the first set of the "Shakedown" set we decide we need to find some fun/trouble so we stroll through the fan camping and find some mushrooms (the magical kind :)) So we eat up and decide to go jam in the barn where it was a kind of open jam setup. So we talk with the kids that were in there and we were like "ya we are a band blah blah blah would you mind if we jammed out after you guys are all set" and they agreed to just let us play right then (they were on who knows what so they just wanted any music goin) So we get into some great jams and before you know it we have a crowd going and kids in the barn with us banging on their hippie drum things haha. Then I look over and a goat is in there too nibbling on the drummers arm. It was hilarious everyone was diggin it. Unfortunately it was only a matter of time before every joe blow the guitar hero had to get a turn jamming with us and also we were starting to feel the shrooms.

The rest of the night was good but I was glad to sleep in my own bed the next night instead of a tent. And my amp was ok it was only a plug of wires that got disconnected so it was an DIY fix and a quick one at that.

Another charity gig this weekend at our local pub. As much as I didnt want it to happen it looks like we are gonna be the resident band their. Its good to have a regular gig but they paid us in drink at the bar last time and noone told me till we finished after 12 :( I had like 2 pints all night then managed to blag another one at the end after the bar was closed.

If we are getting paid in drink this time I am gonna have a hell of a lot more than that. If we are getting paid in cash we have all decided to throw it into the charity fund.

Playing 4 hours from home tonight, at Gatorz in Toledo OH. They have some big name acts play there, and some big crowds, so we're fired up about it. We usually run our own sound from stage but they have a huge sound system (I heard it was Metallica's old touring rig) so it will be an easy setup, easy night (just play).

The manager's been trying to get us in there for a while, and a spot became available when a national Aerosmith tribute band cancelled a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will be our foot in the door.

Probably the biggest venue we've played since we played a large outdoor festival in the 90's before we took a 7 year hiatus.

I haven't been on Talkbass in a while and saw this thread... pretty cool reading about peoples gigs.

This evening I have a gig in a tiny café with my acoustic band, which more or less is me on upright and vocals, my buddy on guitar and vocals and his wife on vocals and sometimes guitar. So basically it is usually just bass and one guitar which is pretty fun because I get to fill more sonic space ;-)

Tomorrow night I am playing with my rock cover band (me, two guitars, drums) We have a new drummer and have only played with him one time but I think he is going to blow the old drummer out of the water... This is definitely a party band and we get crazy. I'm looking forward to this. I am contemplating bringing my stage piano to play on some songs. I've done that before and did the bass parts with my left hand or the rhythm guitarist plays bass on those.

Well, I just loaded up the gear........this weekend I get to try my new Alembic F-1X (thanks bassjamn) with my Bergantino IP112/HT112 rig for the first time.......I played around with it for a while this afternoon and I think I'll like it with the Berg better than the PJB Bass Buddy I was using for a preamp.

It's a new club for us tonite in a small town called Sistersville WV, we'll see how it goes!

Clubdate on Saturday at a very fancy restaurant on the water in Greenwich Conn. I played there a few years back: the food was unbelievable and parked next to the restaurant was a 90' boat, the likes of which I had never seen, as if it were from another planet.

I'm playing with my brother at the Olney Tavern in (where else) Olney MD. Our second visit, so more familiar this time. And we'll have our favorite drummer, not like last time. It's a tiny stage, we have to cram in there. Hopefully everyone will have showered.

Don't normally post to this thread, but the folk-rock trio I sit in with had a fun one last night at the graduation-eve ceremonies for the Washington & Lee law school.

Set up around 7:00 under a large event tent, a small stage/dance floor, with buffet stations on either side and a friendly catering staff ready to ply the band with quality food and drink :).

We play an hour-long first set to about 200 people, then break for about 30 minutes for the fireworks, for which we have such front row seats that if we walk out from under the tent, ash blows on us. Fun in itself, but the intermission also offers guests to take advantage of the free bar.

After the fireworks, a noticeably energized crowd comes back to the tent for more music and drink. During the long second set, we're treated to two women slow dancing (with spins and dips) to Carolina In My Mind, five easy-on-the-eyes young ladies two-stepping to a Fleetwood Mac cover, and the crowd calling out requests.

After the show, the woman booking the event tells us that they were very happy with a show we did for them last week, and we'll get a pay bump to $200/musician, both for tonight's gig and retroactively for the one last week. I've been playing a long time and never seen that happen. :)

Keep in mind this group is a mellow bass/vocals/acoustic guitar trio, and we weren't even having a particularly great night, musically. Note to self: it's hard to screw up the following combination: happy graduates, pretty young things, liquor, and fireworks.
